are they doing sputum tests for tb now or did i read correctly that they are doing skin tests only? i was going to send my girl for a early screening involving the skin test, but i found out that a second test can create a false positive on the next one. our xray and sputum test is clean so i guess we have to be satisfied with that.

First of all, i would like to tell you that the initial sign of Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) is Asymptomatic..meaning, no symptoms at all. Later, as the respiratory infection progresses, the person may have productive cough (w/c is the common sign), afternoon fever and night sweats, loss of appetite which results to weight loss, body malaise (person may feel weak), and cough up blood (w/c is the later phase). The first assessment findings (as a Nurse) which indicates that a person has an active case of tuberculosis is a Positive Chest X-ray. To confirm further this infection, a Sputum smear is recommended. This sputum smear should be (+) for acid fast bacilli. Some doctors would also remcommend Mantoux test (+) more than 10mm. in duration. But this is rarely done since by Sputum smear alone, Mycobacterium tuberculosis can already be confirmed.

Sputum smear is usually done on 3 consecutive days and a person suspected to have PTB is instructed to cough up thick phlegm (not saliva). It is best to do this early in the morning. With the recent medical breakthrough, PTB can be easily be treated with proper medication, good food and rest. The combination of drugs is used to avoid bacterial resistance and should be taken for 6-12 months. If you've taken this medications for 2 weeks, you are no longer considered communicable BUT....you still need to finish the 6-12 months treatment.

Don't fear girl....just pray and think of this..the good Lord can do wonders. He even walked on deep water and brought the dead to life, what more a simple case of respiratory infection.

Good luck!!!

Whoever says you can't love someone online is a fool. I love you DUKE !!!

Hello Vonicks...

I'm sorry to hear about you medical result. Just hang on and try to be positive about it. There's a big possibility that everything's alright.

As to sputum test, I don't have much medical knowledge coz I don't study that field. But when i learned that they are very ####### about the medical exam, I tried to ask our company doctor to refer me for AFB test or the acid fast bacteria test. Mycobacterium tuberculosis are Acid Fast bacteria and they are the bacterium that causes most of tuberculosis. I had a 3-day test and produced sputum sample early in the morning, specifically 4-5am. And as early as 7am, i submitted the sample to the clinic everyday for 3-days. I had a little cough during that time, just the normal cough caused by the rainy season. I could not produced a thick sputum coz i don't really have the "real" cough but I was informed by the nurse that they will just conduct the test and anyway if i really have that bacteria they can detect it in my sample.

The reason why i subjected myself to that test is that I easily get cough specially during rainy days. I am confident that I'm healthy but just want to be sure. I'll get the result tomorrow coz it's going to be released by the company doctor. After that, I'll subject myself to a chest x-ray also. I'm not scheduled for medical yet, but I'm just preparing myself.

So, what I can suggest is you do another test. I mean have the AFB test and another x-ray for second opinion. If you'll find out that you're just ok and very healthy then you don't have to go on "drowning" yourself with worries while you wait for the result from SLEC.

And yes, keep on praying... it's going to be alright... And to those who are scheduled for medical or about to have the medical soon, I think it's best to have a test in advance, especially AFB test coz you know TB is common in our country. It doesn't really mean that you are a carrier, there's a possibility that you are infected.
