Hi all...

I'm a Canadian citizen (beneficiary) and my fiance, an American (petitioner). Canadians and Americans alike travel between our countries all the time without a need for a visa to visit, only a passport or other proof of citizenship. I'm wondering if it is OK to visit my fiance while we are waiting for the K-1 to process. We both live relatively close to the border and travel on the weekend about once a month to see each other. Most of the time I will drive down to the US to visit him.

During the K-1 interview when they ask when was the last time I was in the US and I tell them it was a month ago, for example... is that a problem? I haven't had any trouble crossing the border, in fact, they recognize me and wave me through half the time because I have been visiting for years now.

I'm getting all paranoid reading some stuff on here and just wanted to make sure it is OK to visit. Any thoughts?

Anyways... any advice/info is appreciated.

Thanks!

I drove across the border in British Columbia many times to visit my fiance while our K-1 Visa was being processed. I had no problems until one time they asked me for proof of ties to Canada, such as mortgage/lease documents, my most recent pay stub, etc.

As long as you can provide proof of ties to Canada that show you will return to Canada after your "visit" to the U.S., you shouldn't have any problems, but there is never a 100% guarantee. It is completely up to the border officer at the time you cross.

I flew to see my fiance a couple of times while our K1 was in process, and always brought proof of ties with me when I traveled (proof of return ticket, letter from work, etc). Short of them requesting to see my proof of return ticket, I never had a problem crossing the border. We actually got the approval email while I was in Philadelphia. :)
