I don't think it was hacked. It sounds like human error with data entry.

I would assume that. But you'd think they'd get their arses in gear to correct the error. Instead, we've had days of calls to (presumably) India and nothing is happening! This is the worst banking service I've ever experienced. I've never heard of a bank losing your money and not caring about fixing the situation.

I dropped Fifth Third bank and Old National Bank for similar reasons. Disappearing money, things bouncing when they shouldn't, etc. I have a small, local bank (8 branches, maybe?) now, and don't have problems with them at all.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I've worked for Citi before - it is a big place. Lots of room for making mistakes, no one is ever responsible. Complain now, as loudly as possible. Take the deposit slip to a branch, and get a manager.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. Speaking to a cashier isn't enough. You need to go in there, demand to see the manager and refuse to leave until he/she sorts it out. Never forget that they are supposed to be working FOR YOU. They are providing a service to you and if they fail to do this they should be held accountable.

Let them handle the call centres, let them make the enquiries, let them do this grunt work in finding your money. You've done nothing wrong so you shouldn't be having to deal with all this sh!t.

Good luck, Alex, keep us posted.

Ok so, we deposited two checks on Monday at Citibank (where we just opened an account a month or so ago). I looked online waiting for the checks to clear, and there was (obviously) other money in our account. Then, suddenly, yesterday the online thing showed that we had a negative balance equal to the rent check for this month. We've called twice and they are telling us they have no idea where our money is, and that their records indicate we used to have some and we didn't spend it (LOL).

They are opening "an investigation."

#######? I have never heard of this in my life. What the hell do we do?

It happens. My mom put a deposit in, then took some money out. Told her she had an insufficient balance which wasn't true(which is weird, but whatever), so she went the next day and got her money out, checks her balance on the following day and it's saying she has a negative balance with fees. The bank shows her taking out the money TWICE. They did an investigation, returned the 200 she never took out and took off the fees.

This was either KeyBank of Bank oF America...I think BofA, but I hate them both sooo.

We thought more money had showed up in our account. Unfortunately, it was just the rent check bouncing, so they put some of our money back. :(

This is a nightmare

YAYYY they gave us our money back. They gave it back provisionally, which means that if the checks in question bounce they'll take the money back, but those checks won't bounce. Now it just means I have to pay the rent again...

eta: The person on the phone was super nice! She sounded just like Blake Lively.

Anyway, hopefully this means everything is resolved, but I'll be more careful with banks other than US Bank (which has never done anything effed up since I got my first account in 1992.) Too bad our neighborhood is littered with Citibank branches but there's not a US Bank in the entire state.

This can happen with any major institution. I'm sure that there are US Bank customers that had bad experiences. No bank operates 100% error free. What's important is how a problem is handled once you bring it to their attention. Call centers in India are most certainly not the way to go. To reverse that unhelpful trend, American consumers ought to make that known to their service providers and vote with their feet if need be. They'll get the message eventually.

I'm glad it worked out!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
