Okay, I am supposed to be able to get health insurance through my husband. They wanted my SSN. So we waited til we got that. Now we have it and they want PROOF that I lost my old coverage. WHAT old coverage? OHIP only ever covered in me in Ontario, not even all of Canada. They want proof that I have never had coverage in the US. How the F*&K do I prove that?!

They say I need a "qualifying event". Apparently moving to the country isn't enough. HOW it can't be enough I don't know! They're like "Can you get a letter saying you have no coverage?"

Um...from WHO? God? My Mom? The latter is doable if that's what they want.

"Dear Blue Cross, My daughter just left Canada and while we're all kind of pissed at her for abandoning Canada, we want her to be healthy. She has no coverage in the US and never has, hence her need now. Please help her. I don't want to pay. Sincerely, Chicken_Little's Mom"

I can't exactly call up OHIP and be like "Hi, I need a letter saying that as a former Ontario Resident I don't have coverage in the US". First of all, I doubt they'd give a rat's #######, and even if they did, knowing how fast the Ontario government works, I'd be without coverage three months before the letter would even arrive!

GRRRRR. Stupid healthcare system in the US.

I see your visa is Cr1. I went through the same thing with another insurance company. My hubby and I married one year before he was granted his US visa (thanks to the immigration process). Anyway, my insurance said I would half to add him within 30 days of our marriage (even though they wouldn't cover him in his country) or we could wait till open enrollment the following year. It is such a bunch of BS.

Good Luck

I totally understand your frustration.

My husband is trying to add my name to his insurance (BCBS) and they sent us a letter asking for additional medical information.. I have to go to a physican here in NYC who needs to fill out a paper and perform some tests. Since I am not covered yet, I have to pay a physician out of my pocket and their prices are rocket high..

Anyone has similar experience or can suggest what to do??

This is odd. I've not heard of a spouse having to get a medical to be added to a plan. Is your husband's plan an employer sponsored one?

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

03-01-2006 AOS interview -- approved; received stamp in the passport

03-13-2006 Green card arrived in the mail

Wasn't too hard here in Florida (BCBS), but they did require my wife to live in the state for six months to be added to the policy.

Of course, Murphy's Law as it is, she had appendicitis 5 months after getting here. Instead of the $5,000 or so the hospital would bill BCBS for this, the hospital billed her about $45,000. Kind of makes you sick, that the hospital charged her more for water (normal IV saline - $2,000???) than her surgeon charged for the the surgery and office visits...

The moral of the story - make sure you have a short-term or travel policy while you are waiting for your normal insurance.

Wow, that's amazing that they were able to add your husband without him being a resident or even having a social. I always thought a social was definitely a requirement.

An SSN is not a requirement for getting insurance and they have no legal right to require it of you... I didn't have a SSN for my wife for the first few months that she was on my insurance...
