I don't agree with the whole "we will discuss as a family if this is something we want the children exposed to" #######. Mags is Athiest/Agnostic. I'm Pagan/Athiest. Jordan can watch whatever he wants, as long as it's rated for his age. Hell, he can go to church and be a drooling, raving Xian fundie, if that's his choice. We don't filter what he is "allowed" to see, hear, learn. Electing to not let kids see the movie because it offends your Christian sensibilities seems more likely to (cumulatively) make your kids run far, far away from your religion when they get older. Fostering ignorance is never a good thing.

My version is titled 'The Golden Compass" , Not "Northern Lights". Perhaps it was renamed when it was reprinted? I purchased it almost a year ago exactly.

The American Publisher, being idiotic, named the first book incorrectly. As such, the movie is also named incorrectly. There IS no compass. The original title of the TRILOGY was The Golden CompassES - (drawing compasses). The first book was Northern Lights (we have the UK versions here). In the end, he changed the Trilogy title to His Dark Materials. Ergo, no more golden compasses anywhere at all. Except the US. lol

American publishers apparently think that all Americans are stupid. The US has special versions of all of the Harry Potter books, as well as the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books. I'm sure others are different as well, but those are the ones that I have the British versions of so that I can compare them.

The changes to the US Harry Potter books are quite interesting - its not just the title of the first book (apparently they thought that people wouldn't know what a philosopher was), but certain details in the text were changed to make them more "understandable" to an American audience.

Well if you're referring to my post (because those are essentially my words in quotes), I will say that I do filter what my young children are exposed to. You may find that ####### and you may mock my "Christian sensibilities" but I don't think anyone here has mocked agnostics or atheists, so I don't see why you find it necessary to make such broad generalizations. I don't think that exposing my children to different viewpoints while fostering our Christian beliefs (and btw, both of my children chose to be baptized, they were not forced into it) is fostering ignorance at all. To lump all Christians together and say that keeping faith alive in our homes is fostering ignorance is, well, ignorant. I would say that most people who are TRULY Christian, or spiritual at all, whatever their beliefs, are open-minded and believe in exposing ourselves and our children to different viewpoints. However, if at the end of the day we choose to uphold our faith, I don't see that as being ignorant. I would never tell my children what to believe or what to see/read (if it's age appropriate) but I do think that it is my duty as a parent to be informed of what they are consuming from mass media. In the end, it's _just_ a book or a movie. If someone is that threatened by it, then their faith isn't as strong as they profess....

So, the fictional books are anti organised religion, so what? If the organised religion can rebutt the ideas in the book/film, what have they go to be scared about? How does it threaten them?

For films or books aimed at adults (Da Vinci Code, for example), a heads-up is unnecessary & pretty stupid - and probably counter-productive. (I was swept up & went to see the Dav Vinci Code, never having read the book. I hope the book was better cos the film was #######.)

I don't normally give the Church the benefit of the doubt, but I don't see this as them saying the film and the books are a threat to their existence. I honestly interpret this as merely a heads-up to say it may deal with issues that young children may not to be able to grasp yet. The film is going to be hugely marketed and will probably reach a larger audience than the books did the first time around. (Watch the re-issues with "Now a major motion picture" blazoned on the front hit your bookstore soon.)

I saw the actor who plays the cowboy on TV today(The View lol) and he said it's not actually a "kids' movie".

But still it is being advertised as so, and I agree with your interpretation.

Usually when they do that - its just a case of substituting britishisms for the equivalent american ones. Trunk instead of boot, pants instead of trousers etc.

We listen to Radio 4 on bbc.co.uk I love "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue", "Just a Minute", "The Now Show"....etc. Good stuff.
