Keeping safe in an unsafe world

As a lot of you on this forum are expats like myself, you probably have a few stories to tell.

Life can get pretty interesting outside the states and you don't have to venture too far to find trouble.

I've lived overseas off and on most of my life, a good bit of that time was happy and easy.

But not always, sometimes the dangers of the world creep out to bite you when you least expect it.

When you see a person who has lived in such places for an extended period of time you might notice that "crazy look in his eye", always checking behind their shoulder, above and around.

Well sometimes that's what it takes to survive.

Something happened this week, something that I haven't had happen since the late 90s.

It seems a kidnapping attempt was setup on me.

The matter is currently being investigated so for security reasons I wont give any details, so please do not ask.

I wonder if any of you have had similar experiences in the past, and how did you deal with them?

"Be careful, be watchful, always check your surroundings, change your routines, don't give personal information to anyone however slight, don't throw anything away without shreading it" the basic stuff your told.

But what I mean is more than what you did in regards to security precautions, how do you deal with it emotionally?

For me, the answer to questions like this was just to bottle it up inside and use that to keep me alert. But I was younger then, now I have a family and so I feel bottling things up won't really help me, and it sure wont help them...

Any ideas? I could sure use some.

Without details it is hard to say, but if I really believed my life or the life of my loved ones were in danger and someone was trying to kidnap/kill me I'd strongly consider packing heat.

Or I'd stay the heck away from all areas/situations where the negative event were likely to take place.

Or I'd hire bodyguards who packed heat.

Or I'd move.

To the OP: I can't relate to the realized fear of being kidnapped and I can say with a great deal of confidence that the chances of it happening to me are nil to none. However, if I did fear for my safety, I would consult with a security expert as to what precautions I should be taking. I'd read up as much information as I could to miminize or remove the risk. If that fear started to take it's toll on me emotionally, my potential captors have already kidnapped me emotionally. I couldn't live in that emotional state...I'd remove myself from that danger without hesitation.

I was abducted by aliens a few hours ago. In fact, I'm posting from the ship right now.

I'd give them a piece of mind, but I can't find it.

You are so crazy!!! :D
