My friend (also Paulistana living in Florida) wrote me an e-mail about these people. She described them the same way, but she added that now she knows why people hate Jews. I was NOT amused.

Teresópolis, onde eu morava, tem muito Judeu, eu mesma morava num condomínio onde a maioria era de casas de veraneio e fim de semana de família judias que moravam no Rio. E é verdade, eles reclamavam de tudo e todos, o tempo todo, estavam sempre descontentes e as reuniões de condomínio eram até engraçadas de se assistir por causa disso (e não sou preconceituosa nem racista, e só um comentário e nunca tinha me tocado disso).

Not saying bad things, just noticing it indeed seem to be a trend.

My best friend in school was jewish, and I went to barmitzvahs and synagogues and the whole thing.

One of my best friends is a Jew and he is always making comments about how he is cheap because of this, and how he loves Chinese food (like all good Jews) because it's cheap and good.

Laura, I'm sure you're not saying you hate Jews or something (although saying "some of my best friends are x" is not known to prove anything). I'm just saying that old Jews have old traditions, like instead of politely keeping their mouths shut when something actually bothers them and resorting to passive-aggression or being ingenuine (something I find to be broadly true of Brazilians, especially women, which probably makes Brazilian Jews stand out even more), Jews tend to be more vocal about things. That's why their condition always improves and why, combined with a value of education and hard work, they get ahead in the world in nearly every culture.

I think you made a lot of sense there, they are known to be better at striving economically, even in Brasil. I just found it interesting that people would find something in common with the entire community, although I doubt religion would make people act a certain way.

It's not just a religion; it's a culture and a genetically linked group, too! That's probably why.
