My husband and I will be filing the I-601 waiver of Inadmissibility for his illegal presence and I want to spend the waiting time there in Brazil with him. He does not want to spend the time in his rural city of Rio Maria in the state of Para, but does not mind other rural parts. We are trying to gather information on costs of living so that we know what we have to budget to live (assuming we don't get any work) for about 6 months. If anyone has any inside info on estimates from ANY part (please specify the part), it is greatly appreciated. This is assuming we intend to live very modestly. We also have a baby. Info that is particularly helpful is rent information and what modest 1 bedroom apartments may go for in different areas.

by ''modestly'' you mean no cable tv, no dinning out, steak every once in a while, being able to pay the rent, gas, water, electricity, feed yourself and not count on any unexpected illness?

Yes. I mean just surviving. Anything above and beyond will be great, but I want to know the minimums.

Since you are thinking of living in a rural area of northern Brazil, 380 Reais a person a month should do...

But only for the essentials...

She said she's NOT thinking of living there. From an American perspective: I spent about $8,000 for just me for a year in São Paulo without depriving myself of anything I really wanted. That's the most expensive place, though, and the dollar is weaker now. I don't know how you could live on less than 2k reais a month for all of you in a city, if you want your baby to have nice enough things. Where are you considering living?

I think I'd have to agree with Alex. I was able to live on half of that - without a car, my employer paying for transportation to/from work and lunch 5 days a week. BUT, I had two roommates to help pay for rent and utilities.

I was living in Manaus - where it's not so cheap to live. What about Belen?

Again, I was able to live for less than what Alex said because I was alone - meaning no family like you have.

Great, this is very helpful. We may be able to work, my husband is a teacher. I want to consider worst case scenario, though. He's worried about finding a teaching position without making a lengthier commitment than the 6 or 7 months it is taking to decide waivers right now. Then again, if the waiver is not approved, it may be lengthier than either of us hoped for. He has mentioned Goiania, because he has some family there.
