My wife and step-daughter had their interview yesterday. The guy that was checking people’s paperwork gave her a hard time about the police report. He said it was not correct. But my wife has no problem standing up for herself so after a little while he gave up arguing with her and said the interviewer would tell her the same thing. There was a man and a woman doing the interviews, from what my wife could see the woman was not nice, she saw one woman leave crying and one leave with a scary scowl on her face. My wife was very happy when the man called her in for the interview.

The interview was short and only a few questions. He asked how we talk, my wife’s English is very basic and he was fine with me knowing Russian. He asked about my trip to Russia and about my job. He also asked my step-daughter (in English) how old she is, and (in English) she told him she is 10 years old. That made him very happy. He never brought up the police report. That was it for the interview it was 10-15 minutes at the most.

Luckily my wife had a good friend that had moved to Moscow a few yeas ago. She lived along and was happy to let my wife stay there. Of course we gave her some money but nothing compared to a hotel of to rent an apartment. My wife will have been Moscow for 8 days total. They had a little Russian vacation before the move to America.

I hope this might help someone with an upcoming interview, I know that people going before me helped us.

From what I've read and what my wife told me in regards to her interview at the Moscow embassy a year ago, the front-line embassy employees who check to make sure you have your paperwork in order prior to the interview are young Russians who like to think they are in positions of power.

My wife had no problem with them but she said they were all a bunch of self-important blowhards. They hold absolutely no sway in the consular officer's decision on whether to issue a visa to an applicant, yet they enjoy putting nervous young applicants through the ringer when they arrive at the embassy. Sadly, this behavior is fairly common throughout the workforce heirarchy in Russia, at least for the present.
