JPOLO, this thread about stamps after the AOS interview might answer some of your questions as well.

Take care,

Hi every one,

I had my interview a while ago; however, they did not stamp my passport with the I 551 stamp.

My name check cleared and the case was approved, and the green card is gonna be mailed to me soon.

but there is no I 551 stamp on my passport. Does that make any difference?

and can I leave the US and come back without this stamp?

Thanks

It makes no difference, we didn't get on either. Without an AP and no green card no, you cannot return to the USA. Wait for the green card, if it is approved you will receive it soon, we received ours about 2 weeks after the interview

So if I read all of this correctly, the I 551 stamp serves as a temporary 'green card', while one is waiting for the green card itself to arrive. It can be used for work or travel purposes. The stamp is not routinely given after the interview, and can be requested in case of an emergency. But in any event, if one did not get it, there is no reason to pannick since in general the green card arrives pretty soon after the interview, if the application was approved.
