I think this point should be clarified because the instructions are so ambiguous.

"A copy of your complete Federal income tax return, as filed with the Internal Revenue Service, for the last year (see note 1). If you were not required to file a tax return in the most recent tax year, you must provide an explanation. If you filed a joint income tax return and are using only your own income to qualify, you must also submit copies of your W-2s for the last year, and if necessary to meet the income requirement, evidence of other income reported on your tax return, such as Forms 1099."

Wouldn't this imply that you should only send W2's "if you filed a joint income tax return"?

When I received my RFE it clearly stated that W2's are, in fact, required. I really feel the instructions are unclear.

Has anyone NOT submitted W2s and NOT received an RFE?

My attorney just sent in our 2004 taxes, since 2005's were not done yet. No W2's were sent either. She put a note on the cover page of the entire package indicating that we would bring our 2005 taxes with us to the interview. As of yet (BIG knock on wood) we have not received an RFE. Good luck to you!!
