'Kill switch' dropped from Vista

I've been running Vista since I got a new laptop in October. It's pretty, nice look and feel, but I do find it a resource hog and it seems to have stability issues with Office/Outlook 2007. Overall I think it's ok.

my old XP laptop (the motherboard burned out on me).

Exactly the same thing happened to me - bits of it had actually melted inside, according to my friend who investigated it for me!

Interesting read! I have just bought a new computer and decided to stick with XP, mainly because I hear of problems with gaming with Vista....and the main reason I want a new PC is for WoW to operate better

Rational Purify? Maybe I should have you go talk to my developers, they assure us that despite corporate having paid for the product, they can't help but continue to churn out new apps with memory leaks.

Purify does produce a lot of false positives -- your developers are probably too lazy

to wade through pages and pages of potential leaks to find out which ones are real.

You can also have leaks that are not "leaks" per se. A leak is usually defined as

an object that is no longer reachable directly by a reference or indirectly by a chain

of references. If someone holds a reference to an object, Purify will not consider

it a leak. Example: a cache table growing in size indefinitely because of a bug in

item expiration.

Memory leaks = sloppy programming. Memory management works best if you can

write "delete" at the same time you write "new", preferably wrapping all memory

allocations in objects that automatically self-destruct at the end of their scope,

releasing the resources even in the face of exceptions and other obscure code paths

that are not thoroughly tested.

That's exactly what they've told me, that there are pages and pages of "candidate" leaks and going through them all would impact the schedule in a manner that the PMO would not approve of. At my workplace, the project management gods must be appeased or everyones budget perishes :P

All our memory leaks in prod require no more than weekly reboots - in some cases biweekly or monthly. We've made a conscious decision to live with them given the low impact. We're not a bank or financial institution so there's no expectation of 24x7 availability.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.

Buwahahahahahahahahahahahaha........

Who the hell are they trying to kid. I have a copies of XP Pro and Vista Ultimate that bypasses M$ Validation Tools. Freely available on many of the torrnet sites.

I will stick with Slackware though, it ROX!

Why people use Linux is beyond me.

If you really want to run Unix on your desktop, there's always Solaris which is

1) freely available, 2) open-source, 3) has top-notch development tools, 4) light

years ahead of Linux in terms of stability, SMP scalability and performance.

You have not used Slackware then.............?

So far I've had no problems with gaming at all - everything I've installed on the PC has run in Vista without a glitch. The only exception being Silent Hunter III, which has issues related to the Starforce DRM software it installs and the limited range of graphics card chipsets it supports. There's a forum offering fudges and workarounds - but not definitive solution. I just gave up and sold it.

So far I've run Bioshock, Oblivion, Stalker, Lord of the Rings Online, FEAR, and Rome Total War - all without a hitch.

For me I guess it's because I would have to upgrade my computer to really run Vista. My Athlon 1.6Ghz processor with 1 gig of mem runs XP fine but I am on the edge of being able to run running Vista. I don't do anything that warrants a major upgrade and I will stick with XP until I have to upgrade. Maybe by then they will have some of the bugs worked out of it.

There are some nice things about vista. The look and feel is better than the default XP theme in my opinion. But its a quite a bit of a performance hog and occasionally some software and devices does not play nice. I'm waiting to see what SP1 brings before I consider upgrading to it on my main desktop.

Yeah I like the color choices too. I have the clouds on mine :)
