Hi guys

I do need your guys help for this. I just arrived here on the 1st of Dec, last Saturday, and from the Form DS230 Part II, number 33a (Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN ... , and I checked the box "YES"), do I need to go to the nearest office to apply my social security number even though I checked Yes? I have a description from Malaysia embassy about the Social Security information.

If You Requested a Social Security Number When you Applied for Your Visa

If you requested a Social Security Number card as part of your visa aplication and are age 18 or older when you arrive in the US, the information needed to issue you a card will be shared with us by the US Dept of State and the US Dept of Homeland Security. You do not need to fill out a special application or go to a Social Security office. We will assign you a number and mail your Social Security card to the US mailing address where the Dept of Homeland Security will send your Permanent Resident card. Your should receive your Social Security card within 3 weeks after you arrive. If you do not receive it, call us. If you change your mailing address after arriving and before you receive your Social Security card, call us. We will provided the Dept of Homeland Security and the Dept of State with the number we assign you.

Please kindly advise since I read most of you guys still going to the nearest office to apply SSN. Thank you.

You need to go to the nearest SS office...I've not heard of anyone receiving it in the mail even if they checked that box.

I took Claudeth to SSA about two weeks after she arrived and she had her card a week later. I would recommend that path, that way if the beneficiary wants to work and you have the EAD you would also have the SSN.

Not necessarily true! My husband checked the box and the card arrived 3 weeks later, no trips to the SSA needed. But certainly a lot of folks here on VJ do go to the SSA anyway after a couple of weeks to see if they're in the system, and apply if for some reason the DS-230 Part II request to send an SSN hasn't made it through. We had decided to wait 3 weeks and then go to the office if it hadn't arrived, but the darn thing showed up anyway. :)

DS 230 part II is predominantly used for immigrant visas and NOT K-1's

YMMV

I didn't know there was a difference in the way they treated K1s and CR1s/IR1s when it came to ticking the box on the DS-230 Pt II... You learn something every day here -- Viva VJ!
