I have to have my wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and was interested in everyone's experience. Did you do IV sedation or local with nitrous? Obviously it will be painful but on a 1 to 10 what do you rank it as?

I had to have mine pulled out when I was 20. The vicadin induced naps were the best of my life. My mouth was pretty sore but I didn't get any dry sockets so I guess I was lucky. I still have a large hole in my gums where one was removed. It's really not that bad, especially with pain meds for the first day or two.

I rank it as a 5.

I had 3 of mine pulled. 2 at one time and the 3rd on a seperate visit. Local anesthesia. Wasn't knocked out.

No issues at all. Didn't even take much of the pain meds after.

I got the IV sedation during the surgery...that was great no pain whatsoever. I was awake, but didn't have any idea what was going on. It felt like the surgery took about 5 minutes, when they said I was in there for over an hour. I had all 3 (don't have a 4th apparently) removed and they were all impacted.

I had some issues afterwards, I can't remember the details, but I do remember feeling like my mouth was going to explode. I had to go back in to the oral surgeon so he could change the packings. The percosets helped, I'm sure, but I was still in a lot of pain. Getting the stitches removed was very painful for me, too. I remember I was still in a good deal of pain three days later when I had to take an international flight. Basically, the surgery itself was a breeze, I think recovery really varies by individual.

Mine had becom impacted and were causing pain, so I had all four out at age 16. I was already having a lot of pain from them and an infection had started, but the infection became full blown after the surgery. I had HIGH fevers and pain for 4 or 5 days after but was VERY glad they were out because of the pain I was having before surgery. I went to an oral surgeon and was knocked out. I don't remember having the stitches out....maybe they were the dissolving kind? Or maybe they are still there... LOL

My poor husband, who had never seen a dentist before he got here, had one pulled late last year. They knocked him out cause they had to dig one out. He ended up with some pain, swelling, and, it turns out, a small piece of the tooth left in there. 6 months later, our dentist found it and pulled it out for him. No issues at all after that.

He swore if he ever saw that oral surgeon again, he would chop him with his machette!

i had mine out - all 4. the lower had to be cut into quarter pieces and taken out. naturally, the dentist didn't get all the pieces out and the gums healed over, then i had soreness from the pieces of tooth working their way out.

All 4 of my wisdom teeth were pulled when I was 18. I was awake for the procedure but didn't experience any pain, just pressure. The dentist told me to bring along a CD walkman to drown out the sound of the procedure as that is what makes most people uncomfortable. He even showed me the teeth as he pulled them - root and all - it was pretty gross!!

I was a chipmonk for about 3-4 days with swelling, and everyone called me chippy.. but other than losing a few lbs because of not being able to eat solids for a few days, i was a-ok.

Remember not to smoke and not to drink out of a straw while those gums are healing. Get some instructions on how to avoid getting dry socket from your Dr. - that's the most painful bit about wisdom teeth extraction that I've heard.

I had all three, nitrous first....after being on that for a few minute I was no longer concerned about them inserting the IV....in fact, I did not care what they did! The surgery was easy! It's the recovery that is awful....like the head cold from hell....but it eases after a couple of days.

Follow the instructions after.....I can't remember the sequence but it is icepacks first for so many hours then warm moist heat. I followed this and had little to no bruising or swelling. And afterwards don't drink anything thru a straw, any presure like that could cause the clot to come loose and you'd wind up with what they call a dry socket....apparently it is horribly painful.

Good luck

Got mine pulled around 20 years old, two at a time. Mine were within my bone and was a bit troublesome to pull out. Recovery was painful but not unbearable.
