My opinion is this... No one should ever be forced to work overtime.

Strawman. No one is ever forced to work overtime. To say that overtime is a condition of employment is not the same as force. All employment is at-will, you are free to quit if you can't hack it.

Bullsh!t. You are assuming that the job market lends itself to true choice. Ask Dean how many choice jobs those miners have now that the mine is being shut down. In an ideal job market, then yes, we can choose which jobs are the most ideal when there is real competition, but not in many small, rural towns where the majority of the people who live there work for one employer.

Mental work can be far more stressful than physical labour. The reason we require sleep has to do far more with the brain than brawn. It's our mind that needs the most rest.

So true. I was at my most stressed and drained when I was working on multiple cases at one time and being expected to just bil, bill, bill for hours!

Yes, mental work is exhausting... but most physical jobs require brain power as well, and sorry, but it's hard on your body any way you slice it. I've done both, and I don't care how mentally drained you are, it's much worse doing physical labor. Try doing that for 20+ years and your body wears down eventually. I see it everyday at my work.

You pick your own skillset. Community colleges are cheap.

As long as I see immigrants from non-English speaking countries come here with little to no education and hack it as hot-dog stand guys and gas station attendants while they go to night school and eventually move up the ladder, I will not buy the bullshit argument that those miners can't do the same. This country is full of opportunity but a lot of our population is unwilling to take the chances necessary to make it happen.

On one hand you have immigrants giving up everything and moving thousands of miles to a foreign land to better their lives, and on the other you have Americans who aren't willing to leave the little town they grew up in because they're "afraid" of the big city. Fukc them.

There are really several economies in this country. Rural Amercan economies are drastically different from large metropolitan economies. Rural American towns come into existence and die off based on a single main source for work. I don't know what the answer is....I know for me, I'd do just what you said - find a new skillset...but actually I couldn't see myself ever settling down in a rural community where there's only one main employer, yet people have been doing that. Once a few generations have followed the same path, it's difficult for many to just walk away from their life....their towns, their friends, etc.

Immigrants do it every day. And they prosper as a result.

Maybe it's time for the declining rural economies to take a hint?

What will happen to rural America? I think there's a need for us to have rural areas which thrive. Perhaps they need to go back to family farming, cattle ranches. There are ways to create sustainable economies in rural areas that aren't built on the free market ideology.

This is force. Work is not slavery. There are reasons this country has labour laws. "...can't hack it?" ridiculous. One should not have to be treated inhumane to hold a decent job.
