Happy Monday everyone.

I'm feeling pretty tired this morning and nervous for my final exam in cooking class. The teacher is pretty crazy and will mark you down if one piece of your chopped tomato isn't the same exact size as the others. I guess that's a good thing though and good to learn.

Have a good day!

Sarah since you are a chef or at least a chef in training, i was wondering - when I see chefs making fancy cakes on TV (like ace of cakes or on the cake competitions) most of the time instead of icing they cover the cakes in something that they roll out with flat or put through a flattening machine. i know that i have had this before in chocolate and maybe in vanilla at weddings. what is it called? my husband is a very good cook and wants to make a special cake for my son's upcoming birthday and asked me to look up a recipe for the stuff. thanks in advance!

it's called fondant - I may be spelling it wrong, but that's it.

oops... I see Sarah already answered!

Here is a basic recipe I found online:

Fondant uncooked

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup hot water

1/3 cup corn syrup

European Fondant - cooked

1 pound sugar

1/4 pound water

1/5 pound glucose

It says just mix all of the ingredients together.

It gets gummy and you roll it out and lay it over the iced cake.

Yeah I don't like the taste of fondant either. I guess it can be removed from the cake and served?

It's called fondant. I personally don't like the taste but it makes cakes look smooth and very pretty. As far as I know, those cake places generally buy lage quantities of fondant. I'm not sure how it's made but I have seen it in the craft store where I live. Let me know how it goes! I am taking a cake class with fondant in January and I can't wait!

thanks so much! he is going to make a spiderman cake! with fondant!

It says just mix all of the ingredients together.

It gets gummy and you roll it out and lay it over the iced cake.

I can look up my recipies when I get home, I wrote notes all over them. It shouldn't really get gummy though. I would wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and let it sit for a day.

If you add a little vanilla extract, it adds a little flavor.

When rolling it out, use corn starch (like flour for baked goods). Coat your fingers in it too. It should be smooth, not sticky.

It also drys really fast, so any part that is not being used should be covered while waiting.

It stretches easily, and tears easity too, so you don't want it to be too thin. When rolling it out, make it bigger than the cake so you can just lay it over and then smooth out any wrinkles.

I've got more than this, but I'm trying not to overload you with information

Michael's has it pre-made in boxes. Has absolutely no taste and dries out faster, but it's a good backup plan if the recipie doesn't work out for you. ;)

At work I use a white chocolate fondant. Tastes good, but a specialty and hard to work with (very soft). I personally would never use the boxed stuff if you are going for taste.

Oh, forgot to mention, add a really yummy icing with lots of flavor under the fondant it it helps out alot. You get the look, people can peel off the fondant, and still get good icing.

I thought about that too, I think the fancy look of the fondant will be largely lost on 5 year olds, at that age my son was perfectly thrilled with the grocery store theme cakes, or an ice cream cake from baskin robbins - I am sure they all have a spiderman theme option...

im sure my husband is doing this just for a personal challenge and for the benefit of the kids parents. he is insistent. i had supermarket cakes for the last three years with various themes and he always says he can do better and now he is insisting on showing me.

More power to him then! Cakes are harder than they seem so that should be interesting! They always take me longer than I think they should. We're going to want to see a picture of this fondant spiderman cake.
