It's not all scary. I've read about some seriuos scary stuff in Brazil but I'd still like to visit. That wasn't an insult by any means, just that no place is perfect. I hope you do like it here.

now we're planning a trip to holand, and I'm asking him please please don't make me transit through the US, I dont want to risk buying an expensive vacation only to end up being walked around in handcuffs and taken to detention

Don't worry, generally speaking there is no such thing as an international transit area at US airports.... all arriving passengers are required to pass through immigration. This concept of international to international connections is not done at most if not all US airports.

Yes, it is a very disturbing article and it points out one of the main problems - the US is more focused on its enemies than its friends - and in the process may well be turning its friends into enemies.

For the OP, there are also many, many totally uneventful visa entries into the US. When you come to visit or come to live you will have the correct paperwork and you will find your experience at the border safe and without incident. While there are border authorities who are over-zealous and aggressive in performing their duties, there are also those who are courteous and professional as well.

OP shouldn't worry about transiting through the airport. Their tickets and visa (if needed) for the final destination would confirm their story when asked.

The article writer doesn't seem to want to take responsibility for their oversight of the law. And then saw a good story in it if she followed the situation to its conclusion.

I've read a number of these stories about people's outrage at their treatment by law enforcement authorities in the US. There are always some common themes. For one, they always try to compare their treatment to torture, even though they grudgingly admit that they were not themselves tortured. They say that their treatment and torture are conceptually related on some philosophical plane. They always admit to giving the law enforcement officers a hard time, and then are indignant about the response they get (which is always little more than a verbal retort). And then, buried deep inside their tirade, is the discreet admission that they HAD, in fact, committed the crime they were accused of, quickly followed by the assertion that the crime didn't deserve the unusually harsh punishment they were given (which usually consists of nothing more than hours of uncomfortable detainment).

I wonder - if she had been arrested in the UK for committing a crime, would the UK authorities have put her in a hotel while she was waiting to be brought in front of a magistrate, and given fishburgers to eat?

BTW, sleeping on the steel bench in a holding cell is considerably easier than sleeping on a row of hard plastic chairs in the airport.
