I've used covered litter boxes for years. Best invention ever, well worth the money.

Thanks, Mags. I think I'll try this before entering the world of poop eggs.

If I switch to covered, do you think they'll understand, or should I be prepared for a learning curve and accidents?

I heard that cats learn by example so you're probably going to want to get in there and show them how it's done.

this is the funniest mental picture I've had in a long time

Now you're talking! A mulitasker! Don't forget orange and black for Halloween.

Easter! I think we need to get through Christmas first.

Maybe they have color cartridges that you can replace seasonally - red and green for Christmas; red, white, and blue for July 4th...

That would certainly make egging a house a whole new idea.

that looks fun!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Most covered litter boxes come with a "cat-flap" at the front. I tend to remove this for a week or two as the cats tend to just stare at it wondering what the hell this new thing is (if you want to put it back afterwards that's up to you - it does help contain the smell too). I also suggest putting a sccop full of the old litter from their old litter trays in the new boxes and mixing it with the new stuff. This will make the area smell like a latrine and they will associate it with da poop and da pee.

You shouldn't have any problems. Cats are pretty savvy creatures and will work it out.

We have five cats, three covered litter pans and one uncovered pan. Guess which one they prefer? Yep, the uncovered one:-). What I have used in the past is to take a plastic tub with high sides and put the litter in that as well - I used to have one cat that did her business standing up and it would go over the sides of the uncovered pan and drip between where the cover and the pan met on the covered ones. Those plastic tubs worked great.

A friend who also has five cats uses two of the automatic litter pans. She really likes them. The down side is that the scooper part can get really gummed up and is a pain to clean; plus it can get jammed. So, they only use the automatic function when someone is home to make sure it doesn't get jammed and it doesn't get indescribably gummed up.

They have all sorts of variety of litter boxes at Petsmart and places like that. Go and take a look and see which ones you think your cats might like. The biggest part is keeping the box cleaned out - cats don't like to use a dirty box and that is the most common reason cats go to the bathroom outside of their box. Also, if you have more than one cat, it is a good idea to have one box per cat just in case there are territorial issues.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Yeah, we have 5 cats and two covered pans. I de-poop the pans a couple of times a day and change the litter in the pans at least once a week (I use crystals as I HATE clumping litter). Cats are happy and that's really important. I would get more pans if I had the space but the 5 of them seem content enough with the two at the moment. None of them have ever pooped outside them or made a real mess either so that is a good indicator of them being satisfied with their toiletry conditions!

My covered pans are just basic Wal-Mart ones. The cats have had them for a year now and there is no real sign of wear and tear either. Can't fault them for the price, I think they were $12 each or something like that. I really don't see the point of splashing out a lot of dosh for something that is going to be sh!t on. :P

I have changed litter boxes and moved the litter box on my cats several times and they don't seem too picky about it nor have they had any accidents...I just push them in there and they do their business.

My girl cat kicks litter everywhere, so we got a covered box. It does what it is supposed to do--keep the litter contained and out-of-sight--and they are just fine with the swinging door. The only bad thing about it is that now I don't see the poop waiting to be scooped, and I just end up waiting to scoop until the smell is announcing itself  .

I still haven't found a litter that I love--anyone have any suggestions for a two-cat household and lazy owners?

I use a litter called Mimi Litter. I buy it from Wal-Mart and a 4lb bag is $3.83. It is by far the cheapest silica gel crystal based litter around...but it is also the most efficient I have ever found too (and I've tried a few I can tell ya!).

Many people swear by this one:

And it has a good reputation too. My cats wouldn't use it though so I was unable to change them over - I stick to Mimi Litter now! :D

I went to PetCo today and priced the covered ones, but decided to just get a regular one with a rim like one of the ones we already had. They don't seem to be able to throw the litter if it has the rim, so looks like problem solved, for now. I'll go to Walmart to get the covered ones then should I need it, because the ones at PetCo were $30+. The automatic ones were $200. I love my kitties, but.....I don't think I'd spend $200 even if I were the one using it! :P

I use Freshstep litter....I never smell anything, well except for the scent of the litter itself.
