Perhaps the Feds could contract the bulk of the work the USCIS does out to a private company?

Great - let's outsource it to a private company that employs illegal immigrants :P

Or better yet....they'll move the bulk of operations overseas to India or China. India has the calling centers so they already have their foot in the door on this one.

...I don't see the point in getting upset over it...

It's called therapy. Hehehehe... If we keep all this stuff inside, we're all liable to bust a blood vessel.

I hear ya to a point. I'm really curious as to whether the GAO has done an audit on the USCIS and what was result? I honestly don't know much about the fee increases and I'd direct my energy towards finding out how and why, and whether there is any accountability? Is there any governmental oversight on USCIS operations or do they run on their own as long they stay within budget...but then it goes back to the question of what was the reason for the fee increases and how was it approved?

The annual Ombudsman's report is where you will look for a report of improvements or failures of the service.

USCIS can basically charge what they like. They put any fee hike out there for comment for a set time period and the increases go into effect at the end of the comment period. There is always congressional testimony as to WHY the increases are needed and Congress can quash the increases if they like - but that means putting up taxpayer dollars instead.

Interesting. I take it that the majority of the operational costs are funded by immigration fees? Do we have members in Congress who are our friends so to speak? Particular members of the committee who listen to testimony.

 I thought perhaps since HS is part of the equation that some of the funding is from the Federal Budget. If it is entirely funded from fees, I'm seriously wondering if the process was contracted out to private firms, if that would help? Particularly if there were a few private firms all competing?

It can't be all fees. Perhaps immigration services alone are all fees, but they ask for money in the Congressional budget every year. $1.6 billion isn't coming from fees.
