I don't program things in pearl or manage vast amounts of Linux servers or a massive active directory database at least not for 30k per year.

Maybe that's the problem? You'd be looking at $100k+ if you did.

Just a thought.

I'm not sure that would be accurate for Florida salaries. My husband does a lot of program development and analysis stuff for a big company, and is considered to have a good paying job in the area, has a master's degree...and is not paid 100K. We wish! :P It might be that high in the North East.

Even in the NE, it varies from area to area. Manhattan salaries are insanely high because employers there want the best talent and are willing to pay for it. There's a reason so many Ivy League graduates end up coming to the Big Apple.

Well, I was talking specifically about Unix system/network administration, not programming.

As a systems tech, Aidan should be able to pick up enough Unix-fu, Perl and shell scripting

to qualify (in a matter of weeks.)

I just don't think that's a realistic starting salary for Florida, especially if someone just learned the additional scripting, maybe a seasoned person in that field would get that much here. I could be wrong but I don't want Aiden getting the wrong idea that if he just takes a couple weeks to learn some scripting he can automatically make 100K.

But it's insanely expensive to live near there, so doesn't it balance out? Or are you talking reallllly big bucks?

Smart people make their fortunes in the Big Apple. For the rest of us, there's Jersey and Florida :P

Not automatically, no, but it's possible. Make it $70k for Florida.

I wish I could just pickup some scripting and make a 100k.. we'd all be doing it!!!.. Where do I sign up!

I kind of feel like I'm starting from scratch again and I have have been in the IT field over here. Although I've no doubt it just isn't in IT that people get the starting from scratch feeling again. Luckily there are a ton of exams I can sit by MS, CompTIA, Cisco (if I where a stronger networking person  ).. etc that will get employers attention! My idea is give them something they recognize and maybe they will also give my stuff from back home a second look!

I'm going down that route at the minute and luckily it's just a matter of brushing up on the main objectives for each exam and going for it. Well as long as there is cash for the tests and text books if needed :hehe: Like I said it's all starting from scratch in a way... so I'm starting small and aiming for A+ (just done the first module, next will be after Christmas due to funds) MCP (MSDST), N+, maybe start a gnawing at the MSCA/MCSE modules.

But for everybody else, I think it's worse than "balances out." $100k here doesn't buy anything. It must be like making $40k in the rest of the country.

eta: 40k would be fine for 1 person, maybe a little rough for 2. I was thinking in terms of 2, although that's kind of a unique situation. Just happens I'm in school so it's mine. Alexcentric thinking.

40k is hard for even one person though.

I think it would be impossible here or anywhere around here, but maybe in Alabama or something it would work. I know people on VJ make it work in some places. I think you could live ok as one person in Manhattan making $100k, but you wouldn't live very well.

Yup. Jersey is somewhat better in that respect but not by a lot.

That must be why everyone fatigues after awhile and moves back from whence they came. Sometimes we daydream about what we could buy in other parts of the country. Rey only makes like 10% more here than he did in Minneapolis, which seems pretty standard. By contrast, our rent is 270% of our old rent. And now I don't work. This place can seem hard sometimes.

It's the concrete. ;)

HA. So THAT'S what it is...

Well it's certainly not my walls. Or ceiling, which can't take the construction upstairs and is raining plaster into our cats' water bowls. Yes, this rent could get a 5-bedroom house on the lake in Minneapolis. :crying:

Ha, we daydream too. I'll spend hours on realtor.com salivating at decadently large properties in the midwest that I could pay cash for (not bragging, just saying it's so cheap out there).

This area is hard. It's not meant for the middle class anymore. I'm about 45 minutes south of the city and this region used to be where the middle class was but that's all rapidly changing. Lots of my colleagues have left the area and moved out to the Lehigh Valley region of PA, where the middle class still thrives.

You don't even have to look at the Midwest. Even California has cheaper property. One game we like to play is to type in our rent to San Francisco Craigslist and see how much nicer the apartments are there, even though they're almost as expensive. If you rent out here, you start to forget that when you initially moved here, you were shocked at how crappy and tiny all the apartments looked. I still really love this city (I'm still a few months shy of 25, so I think I have some time before a burnout) but I don't think I'll be having kids here, if I have kids. It's like you can't win. Or save. Anything.
