The safest bet is to NOT eat out or limit the amount of times you eat at restaurants.

For the longest time, I've enjoyed going out to eat...to relax, not have to cook, clean up afterwards, but eating out isn't as convenient as it seems...you still spend gas (which is getting more expensive) to drive there. You have to wait to be seated or wait in line. Oftentimes, you order gets screwed up or is not satisfactory and then of course the sh!tload of fat, sodium and sugar that is in the food.

Eating at home is becoming more appealing to me.

Geez Steven. What a Scrooge!

Not true. Eating out can be healthy if it's not ####### food! And if you make smart choices.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy eating out...but when I break it down to the reasons why I think I enjoy it over staying home and cooking, those reasons just crumble. There are definitely healthier restaurants out there, but for most of them it really is a ####### shoot.

There are plenty of great restaurants - NON CHAIN - in LA that are very good & healthy. Non chains have smaller portions too. I'll probably eat out tonight! :)

For instance I have never had the carl's $6 burger or a 1/3 McDs burger - that is nasty. There's prolly more ####### in some processed/pre-packaged foods you buy at Ralph's than at the Thai takeout down the road.

For sure. I've been trying to eat canned tuna for lunch, but today I had to get out of the office, so I went with my co-worker to El Pollo Loco because he thought it would 'healthier' than other choices out there. :P When it comes to fast food, I wish more places would offer healthier foods. Even Chipotle (which seems to be wildly popular these days) isn't necessarily healthier than Taco Hell...at least when it comes to fat, sodium and calorie content.

It boils down to portion size, 9 times out of 10. Almost all talk about size being the factor.

There was a Chipotle in that list:

16: Worst Mexican entree

Chipotle Mexican Grill Chicken Burrito

# 1,179 calories 47 g fat

# 125 g carbs

# 2,656 milligrams (mg) sodium

Despite a reputation for using healthy, fresh ingredients, Chipotle's menu is limited to king-size burritos, overstuffed tacos, and gigantic salads -- all of which lead to a humongous waistline.

Make Over the Menu: There are two ways to Men's Healthify a burrito at Chipotle: (1) 86 the rice and tortilla and request your meat, vegetables, and beans served in a bowl or (2) bring a friend and saw the burrito in half.

Thank heavens I'm not a fan of these foods. And I cook. :P

I'm coming over! What are we having? :D

Chicken teriyaki roll was my latest "experiment". My co-workers can vouch to its splendid taste. Now, if I can get that promotion...

Edited: I missed out on my spelling

Like a sushi roll or more like an egg roll?

Good one, impressive. Do you cook? Like a sushi roll. I'm not sure if that tickles your fancy though. My husband & friends/co-workers do love it each time ;)

I thought I did until my wife showed me what a real cook can do. :P She's got the midas touch. I like her Ghinaling (sp), spaghetti, chicken adobo, pancit, kangkong, caldarita (sp). :) I'm salivating just thinking of her cooking.

That it.. .EVERYONE Dinner is at Steve's and Jinky's. Jinky will put on a great Filpino spread :D

Yummy

:P :P

thats pretty bad. i've been chefs in restaurants (but not these kinda, more fine dining kinds) and you would never believe how much butter and oil we put in everything if you saw it with your own eyes.

if you really are committed to staying thin and healthy its best to specifically say NO BUTTER, cheese, oil, etc on your foods. even that might not necessarily help. i've worked with people who had an order that said "no butter" and they used it anyway. *sigh*

haha...so true! i think i read it in one of anthony bourdain's books, where he says that's the main reason yr food at home doesn't taste like food in restaurants. and with the prices people pay in good restaurants, they don't want the food to taste like something they could have made at home for 1/3 the cost. i don't envy the restaurant business-people are so fickle about food, especially 'healthy' vs non healthy. someone's eating those dreadful outback cheese fries-outback wouldn't keep them on the menu if they didn't sell. i imagine just about anyone ordering them before this story came out couldn't have felt too good about that choice. but they'll keep on being ordered and ate. i wonder if these kinds of news stories have any real impact on the restaurant business in general? chain restaurants may not know how to cook, but they certainly know how to make money. and their menus all look the same, wherever you are.
