Hi all --

My wife and I are filing for her AOS (I-485) (she came to USA on K-1 and we married), and while we've nearly got it sorted out, still a little unsure about some items --

* The A# that is requested on multiple forms -- I can't find one, and so far as I know we don't have one yet, is that right? But the sample form on VisaJourney for a K1 holder shows the box containing a number.

* Part 3 of I-485 asks for the "non-immigrant visa #". I assume that the K1 is a non-immigrant visa, but I am unclear on what is the number, since there are multiple numbers listed on the visa itself in her passport, but none is identified as being the "visa #". One on the upper right is labeled "control number" starting with "2007", another in red has no label at all (and is 8 digits long, which matches the number of digits on the sample form on VisaJourney), and there are also two lines of unlabeled text at the bottom containing various numbers. Does anyone know which number, if any, goes in that box? I called USCIS 1-800 and the guy literally told me that he was not authorized to tell me what to put in the boxes but could refer me to legal aid organizations, as if which number goes in there is some kind of legal advice! :-P

* Part 1 of the I-485 asks for her "current USCIS status", and part 3 asks what was her status when she entered the country (on K1) and gives as examples "visitor", "student", etc. The VisaJourney sample has "K1 visa holder" for both so I guess I'm going with that, but is isn't that a visitor? I-765 asks the same question. The USCIS guy again declined to give "legal advice".

Any advice is appreciated!

A# can be found in I-129F NOA2 letter above beneficiary's name or perhaps written on back of I-94 card in passport.

NON-Immigrant visa number is the red number on visa.

Current status is K-1

I-765 is same, but code is (c )(9 ) based on the I-485 filing.

Thanks for the help!

A# can be found in I-129F NOA2 letter above beneficiary's name

There is a number written there, labeled "Case number", starts with "HCM2006", (not "A"), and it's a lot longer than the one in the sample form.

or perhaps written on back of I-94 card in passport.

Definitely nothing there at all

A# is also on the K-1 visa itself

Well, there's no number on there that matches the one on the NOA2.

I just tried calling the USCIS 1-800 again and they told me it should be on the I-94 and if it wasn't, then she doesn't have one and I should mark it "n/a".

Pretty confusing... :-P

just take a closer look on your wifes visa! the A# also known as alein registration# can be found either on the the NOA2 above your wifes name or on the visa itself to the right side where it says A# (8 digits long)

when you look further left of the A# you find a 8 digit long number in red ink, thats the visa number!

status is K1 visa holder or K1.

the number youre looking at on NOA2 is indeed the case number which you could have used to check your status for the I-129F online!

check the box where it says "beneficiarys name" above your wifes name should be a number, that is your A#

I am talking about the I-797 approval notice that you will be making a copy to send in with the AOS petition. HCM2006 is on NVC DOS Case notice, NOT the NOA2 letter.

I do have the visa number now, it's the unlabeled 8-digit red number on the visa, but I'm really going out of my mind on this A-number, I swear that there is no number whatsoever anywhere on the NOA2 other than the "case number" which does not begin with an "A", but with "HCM2006". Furthermore, that number doesn't appear anywhere on the visa, nor does any other number starting with "A", nor is there any number to the right of the visa #, since it's against the right-hand side of the visa. There are no numbers whatsoever on the back of the I-94, and on the front only a pre-printed one that is labeled "departure number" which seems to be referred to on the forms as "I-94 #".

As nearly as I can tell, the USCIS guy must be right, we just plain don't have an A-number, but obviously that's a little worrisome since the experience of other K-1's seems to be that they do have one already at this point.

Anyhow, thanks again for all the help!

HCM number is assigned by NVC part of Department of State, and is assigned AFTER USCIS approves the I-129F, the HCM number will not be on NOA2 letter from USCIS.

Dont worry so much about the number, leave the A# blank, USCIS will look it up and note it on future NOAs as well as on the Green-Card and EAD Card

That is odd that you don't have an A#.

The customs guy wrote a different number on the back of my I-94. My NOA2 says A09.....and the back of my I-94 says A9.....

I stuck with the one that was on the NOA2 form.

Well that clears it up (sort of): you are correct, I was looking at the NOA2 letter, not the I-797. Now I have a new problem, which is that I never got the I-797 (some of my notices were returned to the USCIS by the US postal service). Unfortunately, I think that this is going to get complicated. :-(

im sorry, mixed up left and right  that never happened to me before.....

so the A# is on the left side of the visa and the visa# is towards the right side in red! but you already got that one!

im pretty sure you have a A#! every visa that is issued by a us embassy, no matter what country this embassy is in, will look the same!

i have never heard of a story like that!

besides, the NOA2 is the I-797C (approval notice)

I must be one of those rare people that did not get an A# printed on their visa (and trust me, I've checked several times!). I did get my A# off the back of my I-94 as well as the NOA2 though.
