I have befriended a family in Arlinton, TX.

I know this family through good friends of mine. They immigrated through DV lottery about 1 1/2 year ago from Sierra Leone.

He lost his new job due to sickness and hospitalization and is again in the hospital right now. I have helped with food for the children

and don't know what else to do.

The Landlord is giving them until Dec 4 to pay rent. They are behind. I am beside myself to get help for this wonderful family and

running out of options.........any ideas on how to keep them in their apartment and fed until they are back on their feed ?

They do not know how to navigate the system and need urgent emergency food and rent help.

Their GC's were send to the wrong address, even though the correct address was given to USCIS. They were told they have to pay

for the replacement cards of each family member. He was trying to do that , paying for one at a time but then became very ill and asked to resign from his new job.

But what most concern me is immediate help for the family. He is in the hospital and can't call or go anywhere and the wife and children

are kind of lost to figure anything out. I don't want them to end up on the street next week ! :crying:

Any suggestions ?

Anyone close by ?

Anyone who can offer help to check on them ?

I am in Illinois.

Try finding out how the government can help them with food stamps. They will look at their income and give them a total of what they think they might need. And even though they are still called food stamps, they will give them a credit card looking thing that they can use at the grocery store when they buy their groceries.

Is it an apartment complex, or do they have a private lease. If it is the latter, perhaps appealing to the landlord's emotional side by calling and explaining the situation as you have done in your post....it may help to buy a little more time.

I thought green card holders are eligible for food stamps? If so, is any member of the family a green card holder? The father perhaps....he may be able to apply for govt. assistance such as food stamps.

Good luck,

-P

Arlington is a large city so have them try food banks, churches and look for charity organizations in the yellow pages. I'm sure someone in these areas of help will have

more information that can be helpful for them. At least it is a start.

Good luck and I hope everything will work out well with them.

The landlord has given them until Dec.4, they are 2 months behind and he has negotiated with the landlord but it looks like they won't

extend it further.

They found an agency to help with rental assistance but due to the GC mess up and not having a GC physical in hand he can't get it.

He is now too ill to make calls or anything, he was unable to talk on the phone and back in the hospital.

Had bad dental problems with septic infections , high fever and pain for the past 2 months now on and off....

In and out of the the hospital and run around with doctors, no insurance..........but am just concerned with immediate food and rent .

Found one place who closed early for the weekend.

got to run to work.........will check thread later..............

Catholic Social Services and Lutheran Social Services both help with immediate needs and immigration issues.

While food stamps is federal, the program is administered locally, state by state. Here in RI, if you're eligible based on income, you have to have the GC for five years. HOWEVER, if you are disabled, there is no such requirement. And at least in this state, they have to approve or deny you within 7 days if there are certain circumstances....like this one.

I don't think there is an affadavit of support with the DV lottery. The govt basically supports you for the first year you are here.
