Hi all ... my son and I have gone back to Hamilton twice now since we received our AP papers so I thought that I would share our experience.

The first time we crossed over the Peace bridge no problems getting into Canada (my car has Ohio license plates) they didn't even look at our passports. On the way back I wasn't quite sure how to explain our status and gave the guard our passports letting her know that we had our AP docs. She kept our passports and sent us to secondary where an officer only took one set of the AP papers and after 1/2 an hour we were free to go (the officer told us that each time we crossed back into the states that we would have to come into secondary to get a new I94 ... they did not charge us for it).

The second time the same thing happened going into Canada and on the way back the guard asked for both the passports and the AP papers and sent us to secondary. She told me that each time to just hand the guard the passports and the AP papers right away. After 45 minutes the guard handed our paperwork back to us and told us that the next time we cross into Canada to tell the guard to take the I94's out of our passports ... that they are supposed to do this and there have been problems with the Canadian boarder guards not following policy ???? (he seemed irritated).

Sooo ... you now have the precedure for traveling back and forth via car. At the Canadian boarder tell the guard to take your I94 out of your passport and on your way back into the States hand the guard your passport and AP papers and all will be grand :)

The Canadian boarder is to take your I-94's when you leave the States and the States boarder puts a new one in your passport when your return ... that way they can track when you are in and out of the country.

Basically, I am going to say that the US Customs officer can "suck" it with that statement. The US can not tell us (Canadain Officers) what to do and don't dictate our "Canadian policies". It is their document I-94 and it is their responsibility not ours. We do it out of courtesy to the traveller to tak it and return it to the US office. Best word of advice to everyone.... if it is essential that you return you I-94 (which in most immigration cases are) stop at the US office before leaving and turn it it. I have seen I-94 thrown in the garbage at certain Canadian ports and other sit in piles for months and basically are at the high risk of getting lost. It's not the Candian officers responsibility to ensure it gets back to the US office so safest thing to do is stop at the US side and hand it in yourself.

If your familiar with the Peace Bridge I would appreciate if you could tell me how to get there exactly as I can't really picture it in my mind. I come off of the thruway peace bridge exit ... do I stop at the duty free and walk over? or is there a separate entrance?

and I did think that is was odd his irritation ... seemed to slam the Canadian guards with his comment which I didn't appreciate much .. but quite frankly I just want to come and go as quickly and easily as possible (the extra 45 minutes at secondary adds to my already 4 1/2 hour drive time :))

Don't worry about it Lyna. I've never been harrassed in that manner (nor have I stopped to hand in my I-94) and I've driven across numerous times. The guy was probably grumpy that day. It's their form, they're the ones who need to concern themselves with process.... not you. Besides.... you won't have to worry about it much longer because you'll have your GC in no time. ;)

Sorry, not familiar with that port. Every POE should have an export side/area that you can stop off before exitting the US.

hint: Just follow the huge line of Canadians that have bought vehicles in the US that have to stop at the US side to export their vehicle before importing it into Canada.

 That is so true.

Lyna, keep to your left after you come through the lights. US Customs is across from the Duty Free.
