I am preparing for the I-184, well, because I have nothing better to do. I have 3 issues:

1) dependents: I have 2 children, currently 17 & 19. The 17 year old is obviously still a dependent, but the 19 year old, while a full time student, I have not claim as a dependent for tax purposes since the 2005 return. She has a child of her own and lives out of state with her boyfriend. I am hoping that I do not include her when I am looking at the poverty lines and just go with a family of 3?

2) I didn't work during part of 2005 and all of 2006 as I moved to Canada in August 2005 to start immigration there. I didn't start work again until 2007. My annual salary is more than double what I need to prove sufficient support for a family of 4 (if it goes that way), however, my tax returns do not reflect that. I was going to supply the tax transcripts for 2005 and 2007 (when available) along with a letter explaining no income/no return for 2006 and a letter from my employer stating that I am a full time permanent employee, my salary, position, etc. and a couple recent pay stubs. Will it fly?

3) Does cash in a savings account count? Does it matter if it is a Canadian or U.S. account (its a joint savings between me and my husband).

Thanks for advice.

I believe for question #1, since the 19yo's legal residence is not your home, then you don't have to declare her as a dependent. For #2, I think it should be fine, they will look at your most current year and give lesser importance to the other years. It certainly wouldn't hurt to bring along whatever you have. For #3, I don't know what the rule is for foreign bank accounts but for US Dollar accounts in Canada I have heard that they do look at the amount and take it into consideration, not as much as a US bank account but still they do look at it.

We only used a Canadian bank account - NVC accepted it no question. We have since moved the funds in to a U.S. dollar account (in Canada), don't know if that will make a difference in Montreal or not but anyhoo, I think cash, anywhere, is ok.

I think now that the currencies are at par, they're going to be less hesitant about Canuck funds. Cash may be fine, but I only carry 50 gold sovereigns, a tear gas cartridge and a throwing knife in my attache case.

Bite your tongue!! The Canadian dollar is 1.09 compared to the American dollar!!

I remember always converting Canadian to American and getting about 65-70 cents on the dollar. Then I would take that to Mexico and covert it to Pesos. That really screwed me up!! :)
