I would like to say that the people at Canada Customs and Immigration are totally nice.

Ok, so for anyone who may encounter this question:

If you are flying from a third country to Canada and planning on driving across the border into the US: no worries if you are from certain countries. A one-way ticket is fine, you don't need a transit visa (from SOME countries) and all you need to do is tell them at Canadian customs that you are immigrating to the US (they may ask to see your visa) and then all is good.

Good news for us because the tickets are much cheaper :)

from what Ive heard no POE is guaranteed.

That was our experience (11 months ago now); while the stamp is great if you can get it, it doesn't seem to be worth actually trying to make plans to change POEs to get it, because even if you call them twice and they say they can, when you get there, they'll have no idea.
