Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I'm preparing to file a CR-1 for my wife who is in the Philippines but I've been thinking about the I-184 affidavit of support. The problem is they are going to ask me for proof of 125% of the poverty level of 2007. I was unemployed living in the Philippines with my wife from January 15 to Aug 2nd. So for about 7 months I had no income from USA. Is there any way around this?

Affidavit of support for CR-1 visa is I-864, and being unemployed that long it is advisable to get a joint sponsor to fill out an additional I-864.

I'm just wondering if they would be understanding at all being that I wasn't in the country? Also if I do need joint sponser does that joint sponser have to be relative or does that matter?

Nope. My husband (USC) was living in Canada while we were both in graduate school, and we still had to get a co-sponsor.

And the co-sponsor does not have to be a relative.

You will need a co sponsor and I believe you can also use any other documentation to prove you have additonal assets such as savings in a bank account, shares, property etc..

They don't "understand" anything in regards you having the ability to support her and she doesn't end up on welfare.

They add up the the figures and if you don't qualify. They "hopefully" put you on AR until you get a co sponsor who does qualify.

Simple ! No money! No honey.
