I'm late i know. But i'm wondering if people are filing their taxes as single or married. I'm doing turbotax and having problems bc my spouse doesn't have a SSN.

6/2004 - Met Ethiopia (I was there on business). Spent two days together.

2004 - 05 - Fell in love

8/05 - Visited Ethiopia

9/05 - GOT MARRIED!!!

I-130

12/21/05 - Mailed I-130

12/27/05 - Rcv'd NOA1

I-129F (K-3)

01/22/06 - Mailed in I-129F

1/29/06 - I-129F Rcvd

02/02/05 - Recvd NOA1

3/24/06 - K-3 application approved - mailed to NVC

3/29/06 - Recvd I-797 NOA 2 via mail (less than 60 days)

4/06 - Recv'd letter from NVC

4/06 - Found out that there was a mixup at the Embassy - Somehow they didn't have his mailing address

5/2/06 - Husband meets with officials at Ethiopian Embassy - Recv'd Packet 4 (instructions for visa)

5/12/06 - Send affidavit of support, evidence of relationship via DHL to Sultan in Addis

5/16/06 - DHL arrives in Addis

5/18/06 - US Embassy told him he would get a same day interview when he submits his visa app (w/medical, police, affidavit of support, and proof of relationship)

5/23/06 - Submits his visa application. ITS APPROVED!!!!!!

5/24/06 - Picks up his passport and visa envelope.

6/26/06 - Arrives in the US!!!!

EAD

7/22/06 - Mailed EAD form

8/24/06 - NOA arrives in the mail

9/7/06 - Biometrics Appointment

10/03/06 - Work Authorization Card Arrives!!!

10/4/06 - Applied for SSN

10/17/06 - SSN Arrives in the Mail!!

11/21/06 - First Day at Work.

I can honestly say it was worth the 50 bucks I had to pay an accountant to do my taxes when my husband didn't have a social. I'm sure some people can do it, but it was one giant nightmare for me. Sorry I can't be of more help, but if I were you, I'd get in touch with a professional.

6/19/2002- Met Online

11/10/2002- Met in person for the first time at Buffalo International Airport we spend a blissful but all too short week together.

2/23/03- David proposes on the beach in Melbourne Florida at sunrise during his second visit.

9/26/03- After much talk with USCIS we decide to go ahead and get married during David's third visit, with David planning on returning to Ireland the following week.

9/30/03- Phone USCIS to ask questions on filling out paper work and USCIS officer informs us that if David is already here he doesn't need to leave. After numerous calls to the Irish Embassy and two more calls to USCIS to confirm, we decide he will stay.

12/02/03- Petition for AOS recieved

10/8/04- EAD FINALLY arrives

11/10/2004- Our Son Colin Michael Kieran born two years to the minute after our first face to face meeting!

1/26/06- Recieved interview appointment letter.

3/09/06- AOS approved! David is a permanent resident with stamp in passport.

4/4/06- Green card arrives. We are now free to travel back to Ireland so David can see his family for the first time in more than two years.

They don't always know how to handle cases like ours. I went to three accountants before I finally did it myself.

First of all to file married joint your spouse HAS TO HAVE a SSN or a tax ID number. HAS TO - no way around it.

This is what I did - go to "Moving here and your life in America" and find GIMYGIRL's post about how to do ti. I followed that email step by step and had a nice return in my bank account in about three weeks. It's NOT HARD.

Promise.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Well my spouse isn't living in the US (waiting for the K-3) but I am married.

A tax person told me to file as married but to add a note explaining the details. So that's what I did.

6/2004 - Met Ethiopia (I was there on business). Spent two days together.

I guess we were lucky. We've used the same accountant since the whole thing started and he's been great. In fact, he was the one who got us in touch with our congressman when my husbands application for an EAD hit a brick wall and we couldn't get any information from anyone else. I suppose that you just have to shop around for a good accountant, just as you would shop around for a good attorney.
