You are all really driving me insane today. Really. Have you all been eating too much sugar, perchance? :P

So, once again: stop the baiting (potential or otherwise), the snippity comments, the snide remarks. Go have a coffee and a cookie and calm down.

Thank you. (F)

However, the teacher at Unity High School in Khartoum will probably be cleared and released soon, a spokesperson for the Sudanese embassy in London said.

"I am pretty certain that this minute incident will be clarified very quickly and this teacher who has been helping us with the teaching of children will be safe and will be cleared," Khalid al-Mubarak told BBC radio.

"Our relationship with Britain is so good that we wouldn't like such a minute event to be overblown.''

Sudan's Foreign Ministry yesterday played down the significance of the case, calling it "isolated."

So much for that then!

15 days in jail is 15 days in jail. I pray for that woman's safety whilst in jail.

This is crazy, unevolved, gross and abnormal, etc.........

unevolved?

If I said that, Mags would ban me :(

How about I just hit you over the head? :bonk:

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - British teacher Gillian Gibbons has been convicted of inciting religious hatred for letting her pupils name a teddy bear Muhammad and sentenced to 15 days in prison and deportation from Sudan, one of her defense lawyers said Thursday.

"The judge found Gillian Gibbons guilty and sentenced her to 15 days jail and deportation," said Ali Mohammed Hajab, a member of her defense team.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8...;show_article=1

I find it ironic that her defense lawyer's name is Ali MOHAMMED Hajab.

I think this was quite an over-reaction and not intended as religious hatred. If the woman were doing this to incite religious hatred why would she move to a third world country, one divided by war, to TEACH?

Well, those are the laws of the Sudan. And last time I checked, it's a sovereign nation, isn't it? Not my place to ponder or judge about their fairness.

I think it is our place to judge their laws and ponder. When we stop pondering and questioning what happens to us as a society? Especially a country that is currently engaging in government-supported genocide. I think that the systematic and government supported murder of nearly half a million people and the displacement of over 2.5 million people by this country is cause for concern that they are acting so reactionary about a teacher (who came to their country to help) letting kids use an incredibly common name for a teddy bear.

US: 'Mohammed' teddy bear case 'outrageous' AFP

The United States, backing staunch ally Britain, branded as "outrageous" the jail sentence of a British teacher in Sudan who let pupils call a teddy bear "Mohammed" as part of a class project.

"Obviously, it's an outrage," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said after a judicial source in Sudan said Gillian Gibbons, 54, would be jailed for 15 days for insulting Islam and then deported.

"We stand with our UK allies in trying to make sure that this woman is protected from the court that says that they want to impose this sentence on her," said Perino.

"Anyone looking at this on its face would have to conclude that it was outrageous."

Gibbons had faced the possibility of jail, flogging and a fine in the case that threatened a diplomatic row with Britain. The 15-day sentence will run from the time of her arrest on Sunday, the source said.

Perino said US President George W. Bush was not intervening in the situation, and added that "the British are handling that on their own."

The teddy bear case comes against a background of diplomatic tension between Sudan and the West over the crisis in violence wracked Darfur province.

Maybe they are a symbol of Western/American decadence? Who knows what's up with teddy bears...

Actually, they are. The "Teddy Bear" is named for Theodore Roosevelt, the first great American Imperialist.
