So sorry to hear about your worries. I hope you hear something soon! Sometimes it's something that's going on in the neighbourhood, and they "lock down" the schools so that the children won't leave, won't go out for recess. They don't want the parents at the school picking up children because it would put everyone in harms way. Perhaps there is a hostage or domestic violence situation within a block or two of the area and it's cordoned off. Anyway, I'm sure the police are just making sure everyone is safe.

What's crazy is my mind keeps wondering the "what if'." You see these things happen all the time and always think nothing like that will happen to you. Seems the word is the person they are looking for has a criminal history. Ok then....why is he on the streets now? This slapping people on the wrists is for the birds.

Well, this is the second time this week this has happened. Tuesday morning both my daughters elementary school and my sons middle school that are about 1/2 from each other were in lock-down because of reported shots fired. There was an actual shooting in front of my daughters school last week. Just heard on the radio my daughters school is in lock down again and no one is saying anything. Pisses me off. I live in a good town, low crime rate, I just bought a place close to the schools because of this supposed "good area" and now that a group of people moved in, it's going to ####### and fast. Why won't the law inforcement people just do their jobs and get the people outta here? The word is the gangs from St. Louis and KC are moving to this territory. :protest: As of right now the school won't tell me a thing and parents cannot even go pick up their kids. What the hell is this world coming to? I told my husband the other night if the law here would treat criminals like they do in Egypt....we would have no crime! Now I just want to go puke. All I want to hear is that all is ok.

what town is this or is this part of kcmo?

I'm in Columbia Charles. Now there's helicopters flying around!!!! #######!!!!! I'm only about 10 minutes from the school. If I knew my a$$ wouldn't get hauled away...I'd be right in front of the school! Hey Charles....you're good at finding out info....find out what's happening for me (F)

i'm on it. and i remember that now, duh me. that's where nessa and i got her wedding dress.

off hunting for local news in columbia now.

Derby Ridge school locked down during nearby arrest

Published on columbiatribune.com Thursday, November 29, 2007

Derby Ridge Elementary School went into lock-down this morning as a precautionary measure because of an arrest by Columbia police at a house nearby.

Lynn Barnett, assistant superintendent of Columbia Public Schools, said police were at a house near the school preparing to apprehend a suspect from an incident earlier in the week.

The house is in the area where police responded to a report of shots fired on Monday morning.

School officials planned to keep the school locked down until police officers deem the area safe.

Yes, it is very sad. Do know however that no community is immune to violence. You can't get away from it. And it's too easy to blame "outsiders", whether they be gangs or whatever. Lots of times it's about people in your own community, and we don't know what's going on inside their front doors. Makes one think about how much we should be knowing who our neighbours are, so that safety plans and interventions can happen before there is a crisis.

Sad; but true.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

You go Charles!!

I would actually commend the authorities with their lock-down response.... an ounce of prevention, and all that.

When I was in High School in Austin, TX we had this sort of thing happen on our campus several times as well.

Visiting High Schoolers in rival gang wars bring guns and knives to fight with kids at our school.

Most of the kids stood around as spectators as these teenage battles went on and bras came off the cat fighting girls and boys picked up other boys and smashed them to the ground WWF style.

They wouldn't lock our school down and teachers didn't care to get into the middle themselves so they'd call authorities and if someone was killed they'd let us go home for the day.

Ever since Virgina Tech though the educational system has been quicker to lock things down to isolate incidents as the degree of violence has increased with the degree of the media's obession in reporting it.

They're saying now that no one was even arrested....that there were rumors he was in the area. Kinda made me giggle....on the Monday evening news they were saying how Derby Ridge was NOT in lock-down on Monday, but my daughter had a letter in her backpack by the principal saying they were. I was a wreck and went to get my daughter. Yeah, I know I probably should've let her stay in school, but oh well!

I am sorry to hear that Amy..I can tell how bad you feel as a mother. Everytime I heard a news about school shooting or something in the school I am scared for my son. It seems like there is no safe place for the kids anymore. :(

Our prayers are with you and your kids. (F)
