My fiance just read on a forum that she needs proof that she is not married and was never married before. Is this true? I didn't notice it anywhere when looking over required documents.

I don't know if it applies to Ukraine but in the Philippines, I had to provide a government issued Cert. of No Marriage during the interview.

This is something I have heard required for those from the Phillippines. I believe it is called a CENOMAR (Certificate of No Marriage).

WilliamB,

It depends on the country he/she's from. Many countries record a persons 'status' as being single or married - whichever document it is (depending on country) is what will be needed to show he/she is legally able to marry. (Am sure there will be those with Ukrainian experience dropping by..)

It might be worth posting this in your regional forum as you might get answers specific to your consulate there.

I am not aware that it is required but I do believe this information is already noted in her internal passport?

YMMV

Yes, you need a country specific answer. Some sort of proof of single status is required for K1 applicants in countries where such documentation is possible to obtain. In some countries, (the USA for example) such a government certified document is not available.

I thought I had given a country specific answer so let me be more clear...

All required documents for the interview are available for d/l of the embassy website as packet 3/4. Get it, read it. You will find that no such document is listed or required.

I don't know where all this confusion and misinformation comes from but it is rampant. I had the same/similiar issues with my now wife. She would tell me that she spoke with someone and they told her that she needed this or that. When I told her something different she would not want to believe me until I proved to her that I had the official answer directly from the consulate itself.

I am sure the next thing she will tell you is that she needs a r/t ticket or they won't let her leave Kiev.

YMMV

Thank you. I will contact the embassy by e-mail and find out directly from them if it is needed or not.

Here are the requirements for a K-1 Visa through the Ukraine Consulate:

Applying for a Visa

The consular section at the embassy or consulate where you, the fiancé(e) of an American citizen, will apply for a visa, will tell you about any additional specific requirements that you need to fulfill to complete your visa application, such as where you need to go for the required medical examination. During the interview process, an ink-free, digital fingerprint scan will be taken. The following is required:

* A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions).

* Birth certificate

* Divorce or death certificate of any previous spouse for both the applicant and the petitioner

* Police certificate from all places lived since age 16

* Medical examination (vaccinations are optional, see below)

* Evidence of financial support (Form I-134, Affidavit of Support may be requested.)

* Two Nonimmigrant Visa Applications, Form DS-156 (A Form DS-156, prepared in duplicate.)

* One Nonimmigrant Fiancé(e) Visa Application, Form DS-156K

* Two nonimmigrant visa photos (each two inches 50 X 50 mm square, showing full face, against a light background)

* Evidence of a fiancé relationship

* Payment of fees, as explained below.

The consular officer may ask for additional information according to the circumstances of the case. Documents in foreign languages should be translated.

Take clear, legible photocopies of civil documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, to the interview. Original documents can then be returned to you.

No mention of proof of non-marriage. Hope that helps, and good luck to you!
