I spent way to many hours in the computer lab today going threw the VJ portal looking at member profiles in MENA reading ancient threads, looking at old pix, seeing what people put out there, wondering why some people don't post when they're obviously active, and thinking about a lot of stuff.

Morocco has like 30 pages of profiles while Egypt has 14 and some North African countries have just a page dedicated to them.

There is so much information on VJ.

Everyone is so different and so unique and yet having these similarities.

I was thinking mostly about traveling to these places and wondering if my Husband would be able to travel with me to some of them as easily as I could.

Has anyone in MENA traveled to another MENA country besides the one their SO is from?

Has your SO traveled with you to these other places and how was it for them to be able to do this?

Just curious. Have a great Thursday everybody!

LOL are you finding all the locked threads ? Lots of entertaining reading there....

As far as traveling in MENA -- it's generally pretty easy for MENA folks to travel to other MENA countries -- with the exception of Israel. Also, getting into Iraq may be kind of difficult these days due to the war.

But other than that, MENA countries make it pretty easy -- many don't even require other MENA travelers to pay for a visa.

As for Americans -- in general they are welcome to travel in all MENA countries. Often, you can just book your ticket and go, and you get your visa at the airport when you land. (Note - if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport, this may get you extra hassle at the border or even refused entry in certain countries -- sometimes they will allow you through, sometimes not.) One should always inquire in advance about visa requirements, policies, special circumstances, etc. !

I believe Americans are allowed to travel to Libya these days with the new State Dept. rules, but I think you have to get the visa well in advance.

For me -- I've been to Jordan and Lebanon, as well as of course Palestine and Israel. Sure, my husband and I can travel everywhere in MENA together -- the only exception is crossing the border into the West Bank. Israel controls all the borders, and will only allow Palestinians to cross at King Hussein Bridge (near Jericho.) Unfortunately, Israel also requires that Palestinians pass through an entirely separate terminal from the one all other travelers must use. So my husband and I have to split up there, and enter separately. I can make it through in a few hours or less; but it might take all day for him to be allowed to cross. Insha'allah this situation will change in the future.

I would love to see all the MENA countries -- we're hoping to visit Egypt and Turkey on our next trip.

Hey Cheryl,

We tended to keep this same schedule when I was in Egypt too. It was much easier to adjust when I came back to the US, but made it really hard to get up if we had something we wanted to do during the day. We adjusted this and got to sleep a little earlier and then were able to get up a little earlier in the day. The time goes by quickly but maybe the approval for the visa can happen while you are there!! Wouldn't that be exciting? :star:

My SO is from Israel. I have been there many many times and also I have been to Morocco and Egypt. My husband is 1/2 moroccan and 1/2 tunisian and I would love to travel there with him but he is nervous to do so as an israeli and thought he wasnt able to with his israeli passport but recently he became a USC so now I guess technically he could but he is still nervous. Hopefully at some point in life Ill be able to convince him, or better yet hopefully there will be peace in the ME and nothing for him to consider worrying about.

Happy Thursday everyone! This is such a non-productive day. I'm soooo tired and the mochas just won't kick in! I'm doing a lot of shopping on eBay and I'm finding some pretty good deals. Only 7 more hours of this place then my hubby says he's taking everyone out to eat at HIS favorite resturaunt. Actually I like this place too! Last night hubby told the kids what I'm getting for Christmas. Really I think it's for him, but I'll like it too! A 52" t.v!!!

Well, I haven't. I thought about doing some work in Egypt or Suria, but I decided aginst it due to personal funds :) Ammar lived in Egypt for a couple of years with his brother while he was getting his MA (the brother, not Ammar-- Ammar was 8 and 9, went home a lot too of course), and he went to college in Syria at Damascus University. Ammar isn't intersted in going to Egypt at all no matter how much I ask :)

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.
