i just came back from a Bank of america branch to open a new account...

it's been awsome, i got a friendly and professional serviceand she took the time to explain the services available

i had to show 2 different ID, i don't have a driver licence or any state ID so i show my passeport and my Quebec's health card plus a SAAQ ID, they accepted it

then my first deposit was a check from the Quebec's government... the only thing that sucks, it's they're holding the money for a few day but i'm not complaining, i have now at least a bank account here...

so for those who does'nt know at wich bank to go to open an account, i hightly recommand Bank of america!!

We haven't had much luck with BoA. :/

My husband's mother occasionally sends checks from Canada; the "holding period" has lasted anywhere from a week to nearly seven weeks.

With the seven week hold, they told us that the money would be in the bank by X date. It wasn't and he had to fight to get the bank of give us back the overdraft fees. While we were waiting for the check to go through, we even got a letter saying that "confirmed sources" had said that the check would bounce which is why they insisted on holding it for so long. #######, right?

We never had *any* problems cashing Canadian checks with our previous bank. They went through right away -- none of this hold nonsense.

I highly dislike Bank of America and have a ton of contempt with them. My husband has called the Spanish line and gotten awful service, I've had to wait up to 45 minutes for someone to answer the phone, AFTER finding the hidden way to speak to a person (they don't make it easy), I lost a bank card, and they reissued me the wrong wrong, so I just closed the account (more than 1 account) and I only keep one so I can get money to my mother. They have a nasty habit of taking withdrawals before deposits, regardless of the order the transactions were done, so that they can collect on overdrawn fees, and they stole the Keep the Change idea from a guy in West Palm - well, he's in court anyway, trying to prove it, but they are not above that. On MSNBC's blog The Red Tape Chronicles, the blogger chronicled the fight of a young woman who had her identity stolen - someone made checks with her account number on them, and they wouldn't let her close the account, told her she couldn't close it until the balance was positive, and everytime she'd get it positive, the guy who had stolen her account number would get the money before she could.

And when I had my credit card info stolen and a fake card was made and used in Michigan, the rep I talked to kept insisting I must have done it, and that she couldn't do anything, and when I said, "You mean they couldn't have made a fake copy of my card?" she transferred me to another department who did help me.

They make everything seem very easy at first, but it's all a ploy to charge you more fees and get more money, I am afraid. If you're happy with them, wonderful, but I refuse to be a customer anymore.

I LOVE BofA!!!

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

In relation with this issue ,I chat with Bank Of America agent about application for new Credit Card and it seems they were offering a great deal for new applicants especially no credit history. And I ask them about of being unemployed and they answered me that i can just easily include husbands earnings on application .Students, wife can also be approved. I asked also about secured credit card and they ansered me that no need for that also in securing credit card.

ING bank for me. They pay 4.2% interest rate on savings accounts. No minimum fees. Their checking accounts pay pretty well too.

I use Chase for local banking since they offer Continental OnePass (airline) miles on their debit cards and checking account. In fact they even have a plan right now where they'll give you 10,000 miles for opening a free checking account and 7,500 miles for getting a Chase Continental debit card. This expires Dec 31/2007

http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/apps/...Code=A4249&

Normally you'd just get 2500 miles for getting a Chase Continental debit card. Regardless the debit card is $1 spent = 1 mile. I need 25,000 miles to get a return trip to Canada. I've already saved up enough miles for a trip home and I've only been here 3 months.

I managed to get one of Chase's no annual fee rebate credit cards. 3% cash back or in my case aprox 5% in Continental miles.

Bad thing about Chase is their savings accounts have terrible interest rates. Currently 0.2% (regular savings) or 0.5 (money market savings).....hence why I use ING for keeping the majority of my money.

My wife uses Bank of America. She seems to like them. But I don't see any real reason for me to use them.

I've been very happy with BOA since we switched to them - Regions Bank nearly wanted a blood sample from hubby before they'd put him on my existing account -- all because he doesn't have his green card. They're wankers of the highest order.

But BOA has been so great, I'm actually glad that Regions were tossers because it forced me to change to a bank I really am happy with.

Thank you for this info. As soon as I can change to an unsecured credit card, I will transfer to another bank.

I like BOFA, my wife didn't have any problem setting up an account with them.

For folks dealing with international transactions, what i used to do. Look for Citibank, they are basically everywhere, I am sure they are in canada also, so open an account there in canada, and have 2 cards one by your parents in canada and one here in the US, that way you can do transactions on both side
