Please don't have your recipe book pages stuck together so that it's a trifle with jelly and beef

heh heh heh :P

AWWWWWWW.....I wanted to do this post :P

LOL, me too. I even had the quote ready:

"a layer of ladyfingers, then a layer of jam, then custard, which I made from scratch, then raspberries, more ladyfingers, then beef sauteed with peas and onions, then a little more custard, and then bananas, and then I just put some whipped cream on top!"

Yes, fruit cocktail from a can is the usual stuff used. As was mentioned you can make alternatives with say mandarin segments, again from a can. I think the whole idea is to make a pudding that is cheap and quick. The trad trifle is both of these really. If you want to crank it up a notch, you can of course use fresh fruit, make your own custard and even make your own fruit jelly from gelatin and fruit juice. However, whether that's going to be worth all the extra effort is anyone's guess. :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

So when you say fruit in a traditional trifle, what kind? Like a fruit cocktail from a can? I have that birds eye custard stuff at home already, and I have the sherry.

As long as you have Birds custard....you're good to go!!!

 My trifle is so potent it comes with a "do not drive" warning on Xmas day

I only ever make it once a year and it is a firm favorite..

#1 - buy some strawberries, blueberries etc (even frozen is fine)

Soak them (they have to be completely covered) - for a couple of weeks in a mix of Sherry or port... or EVEN butterscotch schnapps (OH SO DELICIOUS) grin...

when ready to construct..

#2 - lay your chosen (cake) or sponge fingers, or jam rolly-pollys into the base of your serving bowl.

#3 - scoop out SOME (about 2/3) of the drunken fruit (grin) and pour over the excess alcoholic syrup over the sponges - SLOWLY so that the cakes don't break up too much.

#4 - Make up one "colored" jello (but rather than just use boiling water... use a little bit of boiling and the rest to make up the mix as COLD water... BUT... make up LESS than the suggested amount of fluid to use)..

Pour this mix SLOWLY over the rest in your serving container.

While waiting for it to set... make up a second mix of jello (different color) and allow it to set in a separate container (you will be chopping this jello up).

#5 - When jello has set... Add the other 1/3 of the drunken fruit... ALONG with some fresh fruit, like kiwi, bananas, more strawberries etc.. add to this the broken up second color of jello.

#6 - then make up a egg custard batch (or buy a container of pouring custard) - if you are making a warm custard allow it to cool somewhat first... then pour it over the top.

#7 - allow this to cool completely and top it off with some whipped cream and decorate the top of that with some fresh fruit...

all up BAD but GOOD for you (and helps EVERYONE sleep)...

My once a year "trifle" even has a very special crystal serving bowl that we searched high and low for several years ago... and by the time the dish is made it weighs a total of about 7kilos (LOL... 15lbs) and believe me it doesn't take long to disappear...

have a GREAT day
