The following foods are known to contain tyramine, a chemical created in the breakdown of tyrosine, an amino acid protein. Tyramine acts as a brain chemical stimulant. The following foods and drinks are known to contribute to the formation of tyramine: all forms of alcohol, bacon, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, eggplant, ham, potatoes, sauerkraut, sausage, spinach, sugar, tobacco, tomatoes, and wine. People with sleep disorders should avoid these foods, especially at bedtime.

Can Certain Foods Cause Nightmares?

With children, nightmares often occur after eating sugar, spicy, or exotic foods before bedtime. Eating sugar before bed often results in high blood sugar (hyperglycemic) for a short while, then, often after the person goes to sleep the body becomes low in blood sugar (hypoglycemic) and this is thought to contribute to nightmares. In adults, eating sugary, spicy or exotic foods, drinking alcohol or taking drugs before bedtime often precipitates nightmares.

Ah, alcohol - nevermind, I'll live with the nightmares. :whistle::lol:

Interesting. It would make sense that certain foods may contain chemicals that stimulate the brain. I've read that chocolate can raise our level of serotonin.

In the central nervous system, serotonin is believed to play an important role as a neurotransmitter, in the regulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality, and appetite.

Serotonin is also found in many mushrooms and plants, including fruits and vegetables.

I wonder if that's white, red wine or both. I sleep so soundly every time I have red wine (besides, yumm!!)

Steps

1Step OneAvoid drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages after noon.

2Step Two Eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed, especially if it's a large meal. For a before-bed snack, try warm milk, yogurt or a banana.

3Step ThreeRelax. If you're tense at bedtime, take a warm bath with aromatherapy soaps, stretch, listen to music, meditate - whatever works for you.

4Step FourStay away from the evening news right before bed. Stories of disasters and corruption can be stimulating and disruptive to sleep.

5Step FiveAvoid the nightcap. Alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, but it can interfere with the quality of sleep.

6Step SixDon't drink any fluids right before going to bed. A full bladder may awaken you.

7Step SevenTry to go to sleep at the same time every night to get your body into a routine.
