MIAMI -- As the pro football world mourned today's death of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor from a bizarre nocturnal shooting a day earlier, homicide investigators combed through the NFL star's troubled past and searched for a killer for whom they have neither a motive nor a description.

Taylor, 24, never regained consciousness after being airlifted early Monday from his walled and gated home where an intruder had burst in at 1:45 a.m. and shot him.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center informed Taylor's family, friends and teammates that he'd lost too much blood in the first minutes after sustaining a single gunshot wound to his groin that had severed the vital femoral artery.

The break-in and shooting occurred just eight days after another intrusion at Taylor's home, during which rooms were ransacked but nothing taken and a kitchen knife was left on a bed.

Taylor was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m., about 28 hours after he was shot, shocking those who stood vigil at the hospital overnight who had been encouraged by reports he was responsive to medical personnel, having squeezed the hand of a nurse as he lay unconscious.

Miami-Dade Police were searching for a shooting suspect but conceded in a statement that they had no description of the gunman or reliable information on the number of perpetrators involved.

"According to a preliminary investigation, it appears that the victim was shot inside the home by an intruder," Miami-Dade County Police said in a statement. "We do not have a subject description at this time."

This was such a bizarre thing :(

It just seems so strange that somebody could successfully break into his home twice. This was not a random killing or a burglar - I think this person was hired to kill him.

Seems like he needed a better alarm system... He was so young... It is a tragedy that he was lost so young...

After the first break-in, I would have hired a personal bodyguard. The knife left on the bed was a warning.

DB, Antre Rolle

Update:

Arizona Cardinals Defensive Back, Antrel Rolle, was Sean Taylor's close friend since they were both 6 yrs. old.

Here's what he had to say:

Rolle and Taylor played together at the University of Miami and were first-round draft picks - Taylor went to Redskins in 2004, and Rolle was selected by the Cardinals the next year. Both wore No. 21.

Taylor had his troubles, including run-ins with authorities.

But Rolle confirmed what people close to Taylor have said the past few days: Taylor had changed since the birth of his daughter more than a year ago.

"He's completely turned the page," Rolle said. "A lot of people didn't understand him. He was a very secretive person; that's just the way he liked to run his life. After he had his kid, he was a completely different person.

"When we played Washington a few weeks back, the coaches were like, 'Count on Sean Taylor to make a boneheaded move and do something to hurt his team,' " Rolle said, "and I was thinking to myself, 'Don't count it. Because he's totally turned himself around.' "

Rolle's family has remained close to Taylor's, and Rolle's parents were giving him constant updates on Taylor's condition. When Rolle received a call early Tuesday morning from his mother, he didn't want to answer, because he knew the news wouldn't be good.

Police suspect that burglary was the motive in the killing, but Rolle doesn't believe that.

"Sean, he had a large group of friends and he no longer hung out with those friends, so you don't know where this came from," Rolle said.

"This is not the first incident. They've been targeting him for three years now. Sean, he wouldn't say too much, but I knew he lived every day of his life pretty much scared when he was down in Miami, just because those people targeted him."

Miami. Is there a drugs angle on this? Turned around his life suggests that he was a troubled young man formerly and the drug gangs are definitely not above killing for whatever reason suits them. I guess the other option is gangs...sad though, very, very sad.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Possibly. I thought maybe he had some gambling debts. Very tragic.

He wasn't a gangster. His dad was a police chief. That said, he had a prior arrest for brandishing a gun while accusing a group of people of stealing his ATVs.

His troubles were mainly just the ego of an NFLer type.

The senior partner here at the firm says Taylor was shot in the nuts.

Could be, but the main artery that was ruptured is the femural artery.
