intestinal parasites, yum

Unfortunately I am familiar with them - not fun...

India too. I know them well.

:yes::yes:

I was so careful on my last trip(well OK, I did eat some street vendor food on long bus trips, you know the watermelon and corn that they give you through the window) and still came down with Giardia. Fortunately there is a medicine that knocks it out quickly but hope I don't get it again next time.

I love the food in India. Especially the roadside stuff. Getting sick is worth it :P

Out of curiosity: How do you go to a country where you feel you will get intestinal parasites and protect yourself from them? I have never been to India because my biggest fear (revulsion-based fear anyway) is intestinal parasites. Can you just take a medicine the whole time?

Iceland sounds like an incredibly boring place to live. What's so good about it?

Best tequila in the world.

Are you serious? My drink of choice. I may have to do some research here.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

If you're afraid of intestinal parasites, use common sense precautions. Drink bottled water you buy from nice stores (i.e. in wealthy areas where all the customers look like Indian punks in jeans or are women with wayyy too much jewelry), use it to drink and to brush your teeth and keep your mouth shut while you shower. Eat nothing that isn't HOT (no cold salads or sandwiches) and stay off all dairy.

I'm not aware of any prophylactics for that. Just drugs you can take after the fact. The only prophylactics I take when I go to India is for malaria. Malaria drugs are scary though, they give me crazy nightmares the night I take them.

Ok that just scared the ####### out of me. I actually minored in South Asian Studies and have never been there. Showering with my mouth shut scares the ####### out of me. Maybe I could have my mouth sewn shut before going? One of my friends from Hindi class lived in Benares for 2 years and came home with 4 parasites, 2 of which the doctor here couldn't even identify. I think you just made it worse...

Intestinal Parasites, do you all mean just like standard Montezuma's Revenge? Or is it something worse? Because I have always gotten sick in Egypt for at least a day ,but I took "medicine" with me. That generally cleared it up and I did take precautions like the ones VJ Troll mentioned.

Benares? LOL that city is the nastiest place I've EVER been. Your friend probably touched the Ganges.... I've seen a partially charred human forearm floating in the Ganges in Benares. The cremation grounds in Benares routinely partially cremate, take payment from the family and dump the rest of the body in the river.

You can't go to India if you're scared. I'm just being honest here. India is scary and chaotic and absolutely crazy... you gotta get used to it.

As for showering with your mouth closed, you can avoid it if you stay in the best hotels. I like the Sheraton in Calcutta, awesome water (they have their own purification plant), great food, but mad expensive.

Sort of, but much worse. I got one many years ago, was bedridden for 2 weeks, the local doctor made things worse by coming by and telling the aunt I was staying with that a German tourist had my symptoms and died yesterday. I didn't die, I recovered, no thanks to anyone. I was weak for months after that though. When I came back, I got bloodwork done, they couldn't figure it out.
