What I dislike about these "predictions" is that they seem to take away many people's ability to actually improve the world. Rather than getting out and DOING something constructive, they can just sit back and go, well the "insert appropriate book" says that the end is coming and I can not change anything.

Great.

I can't think of a religion that actually preaches sitting on your bottom and whining that you can't do anything.

Hmmm, very interesting. I live in Utah (where a majority of "mormons" live) and I haven't heard anything about a mass exodus to "ZION." I do know that the LDS church encourages its members to stay out of debt and have food storage in case of a natural disaster or calamity of some sort. But I would think that if this LDS church were planning a mass exodus, their prophet and church leaders would be telling all the members and the word would be spreading through the community.

Reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Homer gained the sight and had everyone in Springfield believing their time was near, so they went up on the plateau and waited and waited and waited...

The few things I know for certain are that I am going to die and I'll be paying taxes well after I'm dead.

I look at it this way. If some major disaster of any sort happens, how well prepared could I possibly be? Do I really want to have 55 gallon jugs of water, 1 years supply of MRE's, trauma and emergency medical supplies, 5000+ rounds of ammo and the guns, etc., all ready to go?

I mean, if the world were to end and civilization as we know it stopped, then even well equipped would I be able to survive or want to survive in a post-apocalyptic hell hole?

Do I want to travel to the middle of nowhere, repent, and be part of some mass gathering of people who believe they are the only ones worth saving as the four horseman ride through the skies?

I've actually spent a bit of time on topics like this. At one time I wanted to survive, to be out there doing whatever I needed to live, but now I'm far more calm and realistic.

I can't imagine living in a world where humans are just scavengers, technology is gone, running water and plumbing fall into disrepair and stop working, or where roving bands of thugs are murdering, pillaging, raping, and hoarding former items of wealth like gold, jewels, etc.

I'm no Mel Gibson and I doubt I could survive in Thunderdome.
