Zogby: Hillary Defeatable by 5 GOP Frontrunners

All five of the leading Republican presidential candidates — including John McCain — would beat Democrat Hillary Clinton in a head-to-head match-up, according to a surprising new poll from Zogby International.

But Barack Obama outpolled all five GOP hopefuls — Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee, and McCain.

The national poll of nearly 10,000 people — about equally divided between Democrats and Republicans, with about one-quarter independents — is more bad news for longtime front-runner Clinton. It shows that she’s slipping not only in Iowa and several other early caucus or primary states, but across the country as well.

And it appears to confirm the fears of many Democratic stalwarts that candidate Hillary does not offer the party its best chance to win the White House.

Asked whom they would choose in a race between Giuliani and Clinton, 43 percent of respondents said Giuliani and 39.4 percent chose Clinton, with 14.6 percent opting for “someone else” and 3 percent selecting “will not vote/not sure.”

Romney outpolled Clinton by a margin of 43.1 percent to 39.9 percent; Thompson beat out Hillary by a similar margin, 43.2 percent to 39.6 percent; and Mike Huckabee bested Clinton by a solid margin of 44.3 percent to 38.5 percent.

McCain, who trailed Clinton 45 percent to 43 percent in a July Zogby poll, has pulled ahead of the Democrat in the new poll, winning 42.1 of the vote compared to Clinton’s 37.6 percent.

But when the GOP hopefuls are matched up against Obama, the Illinois Democrat beats Giuliani by a margin of 46 percent to 40 percent, Romney (45.8 percent to 39.9 percent), Thompson (46.4 percent to 39.9 percent), Huckabee (45.8 percent to 39.6 percent), and McCain (44.8 percent to 38.2 percent.

Another bad sign for Hillary: John Edwards, who runs third in the polls behind Clinton and Obama, also outpolled all five leading Republicans, although by smaller margins than Obama.

Interesting. This will certainly help Obama's campaign. Perhaps an Obama/Clinton ticket - Hillary running as VP?

I agree that this will help Obama. If Hillary gets the dem nomination I think we will have a rep for prez next year. If Obama gets the nod I think there is a real chance that we will have our first African American prez. But forget the idea of a Obama/Clinton ticket. Her ego would never let that happen.

I see I am not allowed an opinion in your view.

As for this: "Her ego would never let that happen" I will gladly put my money where my mouth is. How about a $100 bet?

Gallup: Neither Clinton nor Obama Trails Any GOPer

by Jonathan Singer, Mon Nov 26, 2007 at 06:28:30 PM EST

The folks at Zogby International surveyed a non-randomized group of internet users this month and divined that Hillary Clinton can't beat potential Republican nominees. Gallup, using more traditional polling methods, comes up with numbers that look a lot more like virtually all other polling.

R/D-------Clinton--Obama

Giuliani----44/49--45/45

McCain----44/50--44/47

Romney---38/54--35/52

Thompson-40/53--38/51

The results for Clinton and Obama are slightly different -- though those differences do not fall outside of the poll's margin of error.

What do these numbers mean? Not a whole heck of a lot this far out from election day. But inasmuch as the media continue to obsess about electability -- and it's not all their fault given the consistency with which some candidates have talked about electability -- these numbers help defuse the sentiment, at least on the Democratic side, that there are inherent differences within the top tier when it comes to being able to defeat potential Republican nominees.

As I've said earlier, I think that when given the chance, Hillary will surprise a lot of Americans who have apprehensions about her. She definitely carries with her a lot of negativity, but my hunch is that most of it is imagined rather than rooted in any substance. It's the, "I can't put my finger on it, I just don't like her" crowd that amuse me.

I know exactly why I don't like her. It would be a very dark day if Hillary is elected.

You may think that, but when you look at it on paper, whatever reason(s) you can come up with as to why you dislike Hillary more than the other candidates, could apply to most, if not all the candidates (Rep. and Dem.).

I doubt if any other candidate would be this socialist. Chavez anyone?

Sorry, don't know where I got the other one. This is the time she said that she wanted to take the oil companies profits away to fund energy research.
