The world continues to look away. Don't.

the above is very sobering to read, but please stick with it to the end, and then send the link on to anyone and everyone you think may also read it and pass it on... we HAVE to raise this as an issue with our governments; what's happening to these women is simply unthinkable

*feeling sick*

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

This is horrible and makes me feels very sad. My heart goes out to all the victims.

History is repeating itself and mankind doesn't seem to learn out of it's mistakes. This genocide has been going on for more than a decade and the world is taking no interest in it.

I have two sponsor children in Kenya with Plan International and I can highly recommend this organisation.

the cynical part of me wants to say 'because DRC doesn't have any oil' but I think it's deeper than that... I don't know; it's like the woman in the article said: animals are worth more than people in that part of the world

and we're all compassion-fatigued in this part of it, and feel like whatever we do, these problems will remain overwhelming... even though that's proven, over and over again, not to be true

I don't know what to do about this... I went to Trocaire's website, because they were mentioned in the article, and there's some stuff there, and an action to take, but they're based in Ireland, and therefore actions are focused on Ireland's politicians... I guess we can all write letters to our MPs / Congressmen / Senators / Insert Appropriate Govt Rep... can't hurt; and people simply HAVE to hear about this :(

I'm so glad you posted this. I am disheartened and sickened by the Sudanese situation as well. And they do have oil. In fact, China is the main buyer, hence the Dream For Darfur campaing to boycott China and Chinese products until they get the message that you can't host the Olympics knowing what it stands for, and still be the largest economic contributor to genocide.

I got into a bit of trouble earlier in the school year because of my personal involvement with Amnesty International. The Catholic church and AI are at odds b/c AI supports women such as these who are raped and have abortions (which is an offense punishable by death or severe imprisonment in some of these nations).

It is a shame that people forget about Armenia, Nepal, Rwanda, Sudan and pretend we are "civilized."

I try to grasp and understand why this happens. :( Why isn't the international community doing anything?

This is actually one of the main reasons AFRICOM was created. Problem is, good news like this isn't reported in the media. Can't blame Ted Turner though, de-sensationalized stories just don't sell.

Interesting. It sounds like a step in the right direction.

America needs to stay out of this. Anything they do is always seen as having an ulterior motive and always ends up with them being made the scapegoat.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You have got to be kidding me. So what ?

The International community needs to be involved and so does America. The reason the genocide went as far as it did in Rwanda was due to the fact that

America failed to call it out as ' genocide' while talking about being committed to end genocide. It was nothing but political rhetoric , as in let's not call it that so we don't have to do anything.

If you see someone get their head bashed in do you just stand by and turn your head because of pressure from people that cry scapegoat or do you do the right thing ? I honestly can not grasp your view point. I hope the International community will grow some balls to stop this insanity.

All the talk about being committed to end genocide is a joke......too little is being done and as I am typing this more lives of human beings are

taken.......meanwhile save the whales is moving forward.......amazing how they all come together for everything but human beings.....dare I say African

human beings. And yes, there is no political interest like oil there and that is one reason among many.

I lost faith in the "international community" long ago. I'm surprised when they step up and do the right thing, not when they do nothing.

Why is it always America's responsibility to deal with? There are 194 countries out there. Going on your example. If I jumped in and consequently killed the perpetrator of someone being bashed. As it stands today, by virtue of world opinion, I would most likely end up being the bad guy for killing the perpetrator.

Do you think the animals committing these heinous crimes can be reasoned with? They need to be hunted down and killed. I do not think the US is stupid enough to get caught up in this sort of situation again; as is the case with Iraq. EG Terrorists deliberately bomb women and children there yet the Americans are to blame for somebody else's actions. Thanks to the many who condemned the US for going to Iraq, America must now sit by and watch these innocent people be slaughtered.

I would like to know what all of those anti-war anti-any action have to say about Sudan. Maybe they can come up with some non-military solutions rather than talking #######..

I highly recommend watching "Tears of the Sun". While being a movie it paints a picture of what is going on down there as we speak. Excluding the rescuing part..

first of all, the article focuses on the Democratic Republic of Congo, not Sudan ;)

I mention that not because I'm being picky, but because they say that focus is continually being drawn to Sudan and Darfur, when what's happening in DRC and its neighbouring countries is in many ways much worse

as to your comments, Boo-Yah!, a number of reactions come to mind... where to start is really the issue ;)

first up, I don't see ANYone saying that it's 'America's responsibility' to deal with it; people have commented on the 'international community' needing to act; that's everyone... within reason ;)

secondly, like it or not, America has set itself in large part as a global policeman; certainly at present you're one of the superpowers, if not #1... with that great power comes, in Peter Parker's words, great responsibility; complaining about people's reactions, IF you're doing the right thing, is like a teacher getting sad because her pupils don't like her... so what? are you teaching them and being fair? then get on with it and don't worry about what the little buggers think ;)

(note the 'IF' however... see next point ;) )

thirdly, Iraq is a VERY DIFFERENT ISSUE... troops (and they're not all American; there are Australian troops there too, and from the UK, and I don't know who else) are there because of a trumped-up charge; this whole WMD fiasco... the world is censorious of this action because they feel duped into it

no one went into Iraq to save the women and children from being bombed, even if that's what they're doing now; they went to take out a dictator they didn't like, and THAT'S what got people going; as has been said many times before: if Saddam, why not Mugabe? or whoever else is dictator of the month? the initial action was on false pretences, and people have a bad taste in their mouths over it

I'll add to this point here that when I saw footage of Condaleeza Rice, a couple of years ago, saying something along the lines of 'Sometimes the UN gets things wrong, and that's when we have to take things into our own hands' - well, it throws the US motivations and actions into a bit of suspicion, doesn't it? if not something worse... the International Community has to be united, not have mavericks going off and doing what they think is best... I think many people lost a lot of faith in the US over that whole incident

I don't know what the solution here is; I truly don't

I want to disagree with you and say that these people CAN be reasoned with, and that violence isn't the answer, but I just don't think that's true in many cases... what can actually be done on the ground is something that's simply beyond me

but regardless, the answer is NOT going to be standing idly by, and saying 'We got eggs thrown at us last time! we're not doing anything!' because it's morally and ethically outrageous to do nothing when people are suffering to this degree
