Finding Jobs Internationally

Hi everyone,

Since I filed the I-130 in August and still no receipt yet, I have no idea how long this whole process is going in order to be with my wife, and I think the whole idea of having to wait to be with your partner in life is ridiculous. I wish I knew who came up with these rules and processes. I'm strongly considering employment elsewhere out of the United States so my wife and I can be together. She is Bolivian, and I'd love to find work in South America so we can be together. I'm a chemical engineer, and my Spanish is ok, but not great. I was wondering if anyone knows or has any experience working internationally or would know how to look for work international opportunities. If i was able to find work outside of the US, I would leave in a heartbeat for her.

Probably the easiest way to do that is find a US company that would send you overseas.

Otherwise it depends on the market. Some countries don't make it easy to hire expats. When they do its usually for high end positions. Take a look here: http://globalgateway.monster.com/

Excellent advice from Dam & Gevita. you can also check out the companies in your field that are closest to where your love lives.- Tailor resume (have it translated if necessary, it's always good biz manners!) and direct it to the HR departments or whomever is likely to understand it - being a chem-eng, you'd probably also want to mail it to your peers in said companies.

good luck!

The petro-chemical industry put tons of engineers overseas. South America, Middle East, and Russia are the most popular spots at the moment. Talk to your friends who work for oil companies (they also tend to have large chemical businesses as well - vynils, fertilizers, and plastics being the biggest. )

Oxy Chem, Exxon, and Shell are the largest US employers that come to mind, though there are plenty of others.

Thanks for the quick responses guys,

I just feel helpless at this point. I've been to Bolivia three times so far and going back in three weeks to be with her for the holidays. I absolutely love the lifestyle down there. Its relaxing and "tranquilo". (Its probably because I'm with my wife and nothing else) But if there was work for me, I'd go. The only thing stopping me is a way of making a steady income if I'm down there.

Yes it is! I moved to Russia to be with my fiancée for a year. If something happened, I would return and live there again. For always, if necessary. It's not where we live, it's that we are together. Most people would not do that.
