been on a high all day... please don't kick me if you're a staunch Lib/Nat; you've had your turn

all eleven years of it ;)

I would have voted for Rudd on the strength of the Kyoto Protocol alone; it's been SUCH a major embarrassment not to have signed before now...

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Way to go, Oz!    It's a major embarrassment that we (the U.S.) hasn't signed it either. Hopefully that soon will change. I'm happy to see that he said global warming will be his top priority. I look forward to seeing the first progressive nation lower its dependency on fossil fuels, where the bulk of its energy comes from sustainable sources.

it was very interesting seeing the way the news was reported around the world... MSNBC mentioned 'staunch ally of Bush' 'global warming' and 'Iraq' just in its little front page blurb; much more detail in the article... they, too, made much of the fact that the US will shortly be the sole industrialised nation not to have signed Kyoto, so that may put a bit more pressure on you guys to get your act together ;)

Oh, I hope so. I really hope so. I really believe that once nations are committed to changing our energy policies, more peace and prosperity will follow. :)

Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free...

I am saluting the Australian electorate!

Everytime I saw Uncle Johnny on TV, I was expecting for one of his eyebrows to start moving. I am sure there were real caterpillars, glued onto his face and not real eyebrows.

Congratulations indeed to the Australian electorate!

Anyone knows what percentage of people voted? That's always something I find extremely interesting.

53.9% voted for Labor - that's a historic win!

The Age - Rudd romps to historic win as PM is humiliated

Thanks for that info! --- how about the total percentage of folks registered to vote? How many voted (for whomever)?

More than 13.5 million people out of roughly 21 million registered Australians voted. :)

I too am glad that a bit of fresh blood will be sitting running the country for a period of time, as sometimes it really does take someone who has been sitting on the outside "looking in" to shake things up a bit... and really if Labor mess it up this time, they will only get around to doing it for one term, we have all become way more "savvy" than in the past and can you imagine if interest rates started to go back up to the abysmal 19%+ that they were back in the early 90's just how long people would let them stay there - regardless of their other policies... ummmm I don't think too long...

and to Len & Bren

Not everyone realises this... but...

Here in Australia it is COMPULSORY to be registered to vote for our federal elections from the time you become a legal adult at 18.

and it is actually a criminal offence not to vote in these particular elections (you don't HAVE to vote in local ones) but for Federal - all Australian Citizens over the age of 18 MUST by law vote..... It doesn't necessarily mean that they actually vote properly (many do a "donkey" vote, which is to go in to the polling booth and either not fill out the form or just fill it out with "random rubbish") UNFORTUNATELY those that do that - thinking they are making a stand don't actually realise that they aren't...

have a GREAT day

Tracy

Wow Tracy, that information is right on.

I always like learning about elections in other countries. My countr, as most people know, had a long and quite dramatic history of electoral fraud (of which I am proud to say we're over - though other political clientelisms and nastiness remain) and the regulations for voting seem quite the same as yours. We all 'ought to' register since the elector credential is the only valid form of national ID (besides passports and I believe DL's), but our participation at the polls succckkk.

Again thanks for the new knowledge!

L.
