I love my Caknucklehead, as my father calls him. But he:

1) Insists on watching every hockey game that he can find. Even between the stupid little teams that he doesn't care about.

2) Wears shorts/sandals in the cold weather.

"Aren't you cold?"

"No! Canadians never get cold!"

"But you're shivering."

"I'm not shivering! Canadians never shiver!"

Baaaah.

3) His parents keep sending us little bits of money along with "Woohoo, the exchange rate is greaaat now isn't it??!" notes.

(Easily countered by bringing up the rampant inflation in Alberta's booming oil economy, however.)

I love my Canadian. :)

I learned to love hockey early on in our relationship. Just one more thing that we can do together. :)

As for the cold part...my husband says "cold is cold no matter where you are". The 39F here is just as cold as the 39F in his part of Nova Scotia. Of course, he gets teased (good naturedly of course) about being a Canuck and living in the Deep South. "I s'pose you find the winter quite warm down here doncha?" Or "I didn't think a Canuck would need a coat down here, being we're so far away from Canada and all." :) My husband wears a coat - our winters are pretty darn cold even if we are in the Deep South. :D

Hehe my hubby tends to complain about when it does get cold here in Tulsa (currently hovering around the freezing mark) and says "I'm not moving to Nova Scotia, it's cold and snowy there" To which I reply, "Yes honey, but unlike Oklahoma, Nova Scotia believes in using neat things like winter tires, road salt, snowplows** and sweaters" :P

**I think Tulsa has 5 for a city of approx. 400,000. Seriously. When a weekend storm blows the city's budget for snow removal, it's sad. I just laugh.

LOL! Is Tulsa like it is here in Georgia when it snows? Here, one snowflake can fall and the whole city goes insane! The school system closes down, the local supermarkets (we only have TWO major chains) run out of bread and milk, and gas stations run out of gas. It's just too funny!

The cold in Nova Scotia is way different than here. It's a drier cold and to me it's easier to handle than the cold here. I've experienced winter (a week and a half at a time mind you) twice and it was not bad at all...at least to me. :)

I love my Canadian. :)

As a grown man I feel uniquely qualified to comment on the issues that you raise.

Let's see....with respect to #1, grown men are still little boys at heart. Here's how the typical scenario plays out:

DH: Those guys (insert favourite team) suck, I could do a better job. (Insert object of derision, e.g. Iginla, Sundin, Alfredsson, etc.) gets paid (insert real or imaginary amount of yearly salary ), for what? I think I'll try out for them next year.

Sensible Wife: You haven't played since you were 10.

DH: That's what I'll do, I play for the (insert favourite team) and we'll win the (insert trophy of favourite sport, e.g. Stanley Cup, Lombardi Trophy, Grey Cup, athletic cup, etc.).

Sensible Wife: You'd only get hurt.

DH: I don't care if those guys bench press Jupiter, run/skate like the wind and make the average high-rise look tiny, they're still a bunch of pansies. I'm goin' be team captain next year, you wait and see.

Sensible Wife: Well at least the life insurance is paid up....

With respect to #2, I used to overdress for the weather no matter what (for some reason wearing a fedora, sunglasses and a trenchcoat in a cemetery when it's 30C makes people nervous :) ) and I had a friend who always bugged me about it. One day he got into a fight with his wife, drank too much (I figure that's how he kept warm, kids and teenagers, but not grown men, are immune to the cold) and crashed his car. A year passes (during which time his license is suspended and he gives up alcohol for good) and I meet him on a cold day, and he is appropiately dressed for the weather this time. His first comment to me is, "it's freezing out here." 'nuff said.

With respect to #3, enjoy it while it lasts and tell them to stop sending little bits of money and just send complete bills next time or 50 gold sovereigns.:lol:

My Sister lives in Nebraska, affectionately known as 'nebbie' and she has made the same comment. The entire town shuts down at the whiff of snow, supermarkets sell out of the staples, school shuts down. My Nephew didn't wear a coat to school down there for a couple of years - supporting the Canadian's are tough in the winter impression - someone has to do it!

I agree about the drier air thing. My Husband (Aussie) and I have discussed this as he finds hot temps here hotter, I'm sure there is some great scientific explanation for this, I do not know what it is. Anyway cold is less cold and hot is hotter in a drier climate, that's all we know.

Funny thing is, the Rugby/cricket watching aussie is now a big flames fan, who would have thought.

yep, Tulsa is soo bad dealing with ice and snow storms. Last year there was a pretty bad ice storm that basically locked up the city for days. It was so bad, people were using pool sand for traction because they couldn't get any trucks in to the local hardware stores with ice melter stuff  the sad part was that there was a fire and they showed on the local news how even the EMS guys couldn't get their ambulances down the side street to get the injured people -- they had to get their gear in the back of a half ton truck and drive it in reverse down the street to the house. It was crazy.

Aye, winter here is different than home -- way more wind!

Well...I live in Northern Ontario where it can reach temps of -50C. That's flipping cold. Somehow I don't see Chicago reaching that cold.

I am sooo Canadian, I don't understand why it is more than 100$ to install and balance winter tires on a wheels here when it was only 40$ in Montreal....Because everybody does it up there!!

We always have that little fight about snowtires and scarves...yes scarves!! I wear one, and I don't get why my hubby doesnt and why not even his children are wearing one. It is cold here too!!

And about the snow...man I will always remember that morning in December 2005. He came for a work trip in Montreal and we were staying at his hotel. About 3 feet of snow fell in about 2 hours, it was the biggest snowstorm for years. The company he was supposed to go do training at couldnt even come pick him up because there was too much traffic around the hotel....and me stubborn like I was I still left to go to work...and got there in 2 hours instead of 15 min!!

I should have stayed with him in the cozy warm bed having breakfast........That's my only regret about being Canadian, driving in the snow when I should have stayed in bed!!!

I did good though because almost everybody made it to work that day.

LOL!!! I love this topic.

Although I must admit, I am probably married to the one Canadian who HATES the cold and has such a low tolerance for it. We live in Northern New Hampshire and it does get chilly up here. Hubby had been spoiled by the Vancouver climate and was so unprepared for winters here!!! He is usually the one in layers and layers and I am the one saying, awww it is not that cold.

Yes I being the former Canadian freeze when it drops below 72 degrees. I couldn't stand the cold living in Canada and can't stand the cold living here either. Heat on the other hand I do great with...

IR5FORMUMSIE - hehe, I've had that sports conversation before with my husband. Men. Pffft. :P

re. the cold -- we both lived in North Dakota for a while. Temperatures of -60F, 12 foot-high snowdrifts...bleeeeegh. I think the Kansas summer did spoil him a bit because I've heard some protests about the cold weather. However, he still insists on walking around in his sandals so I take everything he says with a grain of salt.

Your body adjusts to the climate that it's used to. Notably, your blood thickens if you live in a colder climate and thins in warmer climates. My first winter back in Kansas after spending two years in North Dakota, I lived in t-shirts & no jacket. This winter 'tho, I'm finding it a bit difficult to adjust to the cold weather. My blood must be thinning. :(
