once you know what your options are (ie where the various flights you could take will land), you might like to read some POE reviews here :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Through reading the experiences of people who have used both these POEs, I dont think one holds favour over another. However, the advantage of JFK is that you should have to opportunity to obtain an EAD stamp in your passport which will act as proof that you are work authorised for the first 90 days. Because of this reason Im going to try my best to get a flight that goes through JFK when I make the final move.

Usually, you don't have a much choice of a PoE, it depends where your flight goes. Lots of flights from Asia go through LAX, while many flights from Europe/Africa go through JFK.

I think Atlanta and San Francisco are popular POE's too.

generally speaking, the miami POE is pretty good. there have been few reported problems on VJ. (my wife is from barbados). the ticket prices direct to JFK are usually pretty expensive, you might think of going through miami.

There's the left coast (Cali) and the right coast (NY) and there is also the third coast. Houston POE wasn't so bad for my wife and stepdaughter. They both got EAD stamps (even though my stepdaughter wasn't eligible) and it was convenient since we live in Houston. Their flights from Moscow were cheap too.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for in a "best" POE. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

As others have stated, it would depend on where your journey originates:

  • For those originating from Vancouver, Windsor (or another US-border city), the easiest POE is the closest one. This can also be used if you are driving into US from an "inland" (not directly on the border) city such as Calgary
  • If starting in a non-border Canadian city and flying in, the nearest airport with a PFI--you get on "scot-free" having cleared immigration and customs
  • For travellers NOT in Canada, there may be limited choice--but generally the US Airport specifically equipped with POE closest to destination (unfortunately, travel agents may not always book this way)
  • For travellers from EU, UK and Irish Republic, the Immigration-only PFI's at Dublin and Shannon are options (but this means that you will have the customs hassle on landing)
  • There have also been questions about whether it is OK to land in Toronto (not directly ON the border, but about 100 km away) and then drive across--on this, proceed with caution, as it also involves Canada's Customs & Immigration--whose officials MAY NOT accept that

For the OP: JFK will probably work. It may also have been possible to transfer in a third country (Canada NOT optimal due to being an "overshoot" from Guyana) and then land directly at MSP, but don't need to further complicate it now.

For Sid&Nancy: Atlanta is one of the popular POE's on the "hate list" (due to being the world's busiest airport)--especially if the traveller has to clear immigration/customs and then transfer to another flight there (the latter is a known headache); if only landing and clearing, it's excellent (I've been through it twice).

We went through Miami and had a wonderful experience. We traveled on a Tuesday so it wasn't overcrowded and the immigration officials were very nice to both my husband and I.
