As is Russian custom and law, my wife took my family name when we married in Russia recently. Now she has applied for new passports so they show her new last name. I think this is the right thing to do especially as regards to getting her visa.

But she is concerned that maybe some I-130 or I129F forms or supporting documents might show her old passport numbers. I looked through the forms and did not see any questions asking for passport numbers but maybe i missed something.

Should we be concerned that she will have new passport numbers before the visa process concludes?

i dont see any problem in that, but she will have to go for her interview with the previous passport also.

karla5001, here is the thing anytime u want to go for interview at any embassy ur previous passport is needed even u dont change names. if u have ever use any passport b4 u need to bring it along, there is no problem in having it with u , changing of name after marriage is a usual thing,

if u lost ur passport, and u have copies of all the pages stamp in on ur old passport u can go with the copies. but if u never travel with the passport b4 it does not make any difference to go with the copies, that is why passport office return the old passport when u apply for new one so u can clip the two together just to show ur previous trip, but in her case, if she apply for her i-130 or i-129f with her previous names, and she included her biodata page of her passport with it . all the corenspondent will be written in the name on her applications, till it get to embassy, so it will be better for her to have the two passpport with her,but if she did not include the biodata page of her previous passport with her i-130 or i-129f, she only need her birth cert, marriage cert, and her new passport. that is why most embassy ask in their application forms that is this ur first passpport.

i see...so in my husbands case that he has never traveled but has had 3 passports....lost his second one...he would only need to take his most recent one that is valid when he goes for his CR1 interview in El Salvador?

the embassy probably wont ask for the previous ones.... i guess.

thats for all the good info...

My Russian wife got a new passport as weel but before we applied I-130. Also since we have been married for 5 years and lots of traveling (due to this priority date mess with green cards etc.) she had to change 2 passports both previous ones with my last name.

Also my wife told me that there is a special passpot catogorty for Russian citizens planing to immigrate to other countries. I'm not sure about all the details. Something to look at.

So I do not think this passport number is an issue but you need to give all the previous passports to embassy at the time of the interview.

Custom, of course. But this is law? I know a married Russian woman, living in Russia, that kept her family name for business reasons because her father was the owner. She wanted potential clients to immediately see the family connection without explanation.

As is Russian custom and law...

Well, the way the ZAGs process and paperwork is, the wife signs papers with husband's last name. I did not see options or choices. But anything can be done with money or perhaps prior paperwork to keep her same name.

I'd say you hit the nail right on the head. Her father is a very successful businessman with plenty of local pull. I've even heard of some Russian men taking their lady's family name if she is the one with the resources in the family.
