Hi Pari,

According to the Applicant document processing instructions:

Translations

All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations.

The translation must include a statement signed by the translator that states that the:

Translation is accurate, and

Translator is competent to translate.

I also noticed on the Montreal specific instructions that is says it has to be notarized, but I don't know if that is accurate? Hopefully someone who had to have their birth certificate translated will come along and confirm:

Note on translations. All documents not in English must be accompanied by certified translations into English. Translations must be certified by a competent translator and sworn to by him before a Notary.

I went to my consulate (country of origin), got it in 5 minutes, brought my original BC in native language. Consuls have the legal notary power, payd 40.00, with the seal and everything. Or on another occasion with the French PC, (my stay in France) i took it to a translator who had also the legal power ..the oath of something, as a notary act, cost 25.00.

Hi Pari,

I would give them a call or send them an email to ask if they offer this service. If they don't they might know someone who does.

The Consulate of the original country's translation IS in itself or has the same value as a notarized document; maybe that's why it costed more than a traditional translator. I don't think parinita understood my post above, or me not being clear enough.

Ohhh I understand what you mean, that's really interesting, I didn't know that. It seems unusual that the consulate won't help her out, but I suppose it depends how busy they are.

Pari,

If you have a friend who's fluent, she/he can do the deed. Or you know what? come think about it, in Alberta -where we lived- Catholic Social Services offered free translations -- check out those guys, or something similar. I ended up going with a dude I had to pay (long story), but it was well worth it.

It was by accident i learned the Consulate translates, otherwise i would have used a tranditional translator...like everybody...

But otherwise, she can search for the Board of translators (as the ones for psychologists, laywers, doctors, all professionals), of a translator for her native language, etc...and precise there, the notarized stuff, is just anohter seal they put on the translated paper...i can earch my own copy if need more info...And it costs less than the Consulate...

My husband (the beneficiary) is having an issue with this translation of the BC as well. He contacted his Consulate (Chile) in Toronto and was told they don't do translations. So, he is down to finding an attorney (since those are the notaries) who can translate from Spanish as well. It majorly sucks.
