This was funny. I walked into work and saw our tech guy in the conference room while he was supposed to be in China doing training! I asked his colleague if that was indeed the guy. He tells me -- yes, he was supposed to travel on Sunday but he did not have his visa! The travel agent never told him. He went to the airport counter to check in, and the agent asked for the visa. I said “Didn’t he know he needed a visa to get into China? Well, the response was, the travel agent never told him he needed one.

And I said “Well, these Americans. They think they can travel anywhere! Do whatever they want!”

Since when is it the TRAVEL AGENT's responsibility to inform the customer about visa requirements of destination country?

Well..... I think if you're working with a travel agent and he's helping you and informing you about your trip and destinations, he should tell you what documents you'll need. I thought that was obvious.

Of course, it's the customer's job to make sure everything is in order too.....

OUR COMPLETE TIMELINE

Latest steps:

10/26/2006- Consulate receives case (seriously, one month to receive the case?? BS!), and packet 3 that I sent even before they had received the case.

01/02/2007- Interview!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got a 221(g)

01/23/2007- Second Interview. VISA granted!!!

01/29/2007- VISA arrived.... no envelope though. I'm gonna contact them and see what happened this time!

01/31/2007- I'll have to send them one last financial support evidence.

02/01/2007- Evidence sent

02/02/2007- Evidence received by Consulate

02/06/2007- Consulate sends envelope!

02/07/2007- Envelope received!!!

02/10/2007- Flew to the USA!!!!!!

04/17/2007- Wedding day!!!

Since when is it the TRAVEL AGENT's responsibility to inform the customer about visa requirements of destination country?

It isn't, but the Ukrainian travel agent I buy tickets from to go to Belarus always asks me if I already have a valid visa. It's not her responsibility...but it's a nice touch. That's why I do business with her agency.

However, I got a ration of sh*t at the airport once when boarding a Lufthansa plane going to Frankfurt (and later connecting on to Minsk). The ticket taker in Houston started raising hell with me because my passport was expiring in less than 3 months. As I told her...why then did the Belarus embassy issue me a visa in the same passport? The visa expired a long time before my passport would. She rudely informed me not to get upset if I got turned back at the airport in Frankfurt. I didn't nor did I have any other problems anywhere else except with her. Jeez!

I agree. A good travel agent WOULD inform you of visa requirements.

I thought that you have to have the interview with the embassy for the visa to china.. at least the Chinese embassy in Bangkok do require that..(yea.. also the Americans have to have the interview.. as my hubby were going to apply but didnt get a chance to)

Actually, come to think of it -- unless you get your chinese visa directly from the embassy/consulate, you have to have someone arrange it for you (can't apply directly by post), usually a travel agent. I'd say they sell you a ticket to china, they should offer to arrange the visa.

Well then, it makes two of them -- the travel agent and the prospective traveller!

I would think that would fall on the travel agent, at least to remind the person they need a visa. Jeez, every time I book a ticket to Brazil, from where ever, (internet, agency, phone) I always get asked if I have a visa.

Fire the travel agent. When you book online it reminds you that you may need a visa ect.....
