I honestly was under the mistaken assumption that they increased fees in order to hire more people and eliminate the backlog. Silly me.

Anyone know the official reason for increasing fees?

Why does it always have to get back to EWI's with you people?

Because it is the 2 ton pink elephant that someone dumped into my living room while nobody was looking. If I gotta live with it and put up with it...I'm gonna make sure everybody hears about it until somebody does something about it.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Squeak! Squeak! ;)

The topic in the article has nothing to do with your 2 ton pink elephant.

...............My biggest problem with this article is the fact that these people waited 2-4 years AFTER they could have applied, why did they wait? Why, all of a sudden, do they care about having their voice heard in '08? .................

Here's an example of why - right from the mouth of a Canadian I know who has been in this country 20 years.

Because he's been raising his family and the filing fee was needed for groceries, shoes for the kids, and normal everyday stuff like that.

When he heard about the big fee hike, he decided to scrape up the money to finally get it done.

He's personally excited that he will get to vote. Because it's also the first time his two older children will be voting in a national election, and he thinks it'll be a cool thing they all vote together for the first time.

Au contraire. The article specifically highlighted Hispanics as being upset with the delays. Why are their delays any more earth shattering or significant than anybody elses'? Several of us explained why their panties are in such a knot over the delays.

There is more to the story than meets the eye as I pointed out. The 2 ton pink elephant is at the root of it. The truth isn't always flattering or pretty and some people can't handle the truth if it doesn't jive with their take on the issue.

Can you imagine the delays for legitimate visas if illegal immigrants are given amnesty.. I would say at least a year or so..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

How on earth is it importing votes for legal permanent residents to become citizens? Not EWIs or overstays here. They're not the ones that hiked the fees up which lead to a very predictable increase in applications, even among our own VJers. That's legal immigration and one potential outcome of LEGAL immigration, even if you don't like the fact that they're unlikely to vote the way you want.

This whole process is ridiculous. I mean, really, you can b!tch that it's not the government's fault they won't be processed in time (yet if that's the case, don't b!tch about not getting a receipt, after all, it's not the government's fault, right?), but July 2007 is what, a year and a half before the presidential election? Expecting a turn around time of less than a year and a half is not some crazy demand. Do you really want to argue that that's an acceptable timeline just because they might not vote Republican?

One would think that LEGAL immigrants would be glad that the insane backlog is getting some attention.

Numero uno...I'm not b*tching about how long it takes for my wife to become a US citizen. I hope my government takes whatever reasonable time it takes to determine if applicants meet all legal requirements. I do not want terrorists, criminals, or fraudsters to be bestowed with US citizenship. It's not about loading up Democratic (or Republican) voters for the election. Unlike the "Hispanic leaders" at the beginning of the article that are primarily concerned with getting out the vote for their amnesty agenda.

Importing votes? What do you think the last 3 attempts at amnesty were all about? The left wing of the Democratic party is betting the farm on mass blanket amnesty for illegal aliens of whom 80+% are from Latin America. Take a gander at this article in my hometown newspaper. This isn't the "Daily Socialist Worker" or "The Neo-Con Gazette". This is the local newspaper with the largest circulation in the big city of Houston (where 12+% of the population is illegal aliens).

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/5322009.html

From the Houston Chronicle:

Latino influx shakes up Iowa's political picture

Now more than 115,000 Hispanics live in Iowa, comprising almost 4 percent of the state's population of 3 million.

The rapid growth of Iowa's Hispanic population, particularly the estimated 55,000 to 85,000 here illegally...

Democratic converts

...Sylvia Padilla, a Mexican-American whose first language is Spanish, expressed similar sentiments. "Republicans no good for me," she said.

And you don't see amnestied illegal aliens as "imported votes"? Let's get real here. There have been 7 illegal alien amnesties since 1986 and these people have come to believe it is some sort of guaranteed right that they can illegally immigrate and expect mass amnesty on demand. Geez...most of the Hispanics in Iowa are illegal aliens. It's just as bad (if not worst) in Texas, most of the Southwest USA, and other parts of the USA.

And who mostly panders to them? I'll give you 3 guesses and the first 2 don't count. This is so wrong on so many levels I can't believe any American buys into this #######. There is a whole slough of candidates from both parties that vie for this lowest common denominator for their own personal gain. All the Democratic presidential candidates and some misguided Republicans. I won't vote for any of them. They can all "go to hell".

Let's get a grip on reality here. Not to mention the invisible hand of Mexico in this. They want "their" citizens to vote in both Mexican and American elections. This is not good for America. Only an idiot would believe it is.

Your argument would almost make sense (we still have the problem of the 1986 amnesty being a nefarious plan to secure the 2008 Democratic vote.....) except for one point. Until very recently, Hispanic voters by and large trended slightly Republican. Catholic, Western, plus a couple loser Dem candidates = Republican. Indeed, that's one reason Bush wanted to push through immigration reform -- lock up the Hispanic vote as Republican for the next twenty or thirty years.

Of course, with the immigration attention in the past couple of years, the trolls came out of the woodwork, arguing that the real problem was just the presence of the immigrants and Hispanics in general. Tancredo wants a freeze on legal immigration. His position draws all sorts of types who really do seem to be motivated by hatred and fear. They talk of being overrun, scream about seeing Spanish signs or hearing it on the street, simultaneously argue that they're too lazy to work and steal all our benefits and too hardworking that they steal jobs.... And while there are no doubt many people that just want borders enforced, their allies are a lot of people who are prejudiced and aren't too careful about whether someone has papers or not if they look Hispanic. In fact, like we see with the Oklahoma law, people are willing to make it a felony just to associate with someone who is illegal. ICE recently had a raid in Minnesota where they arrested and detained many legal permanent residents and while it all got sorted out eventually, people were left with the impression that if you're Hispanic and legal, no one cares about the legal part.

The result is that the Republican party does not look like a friend to you if you are Hispanic and here legally. That alone provides a big incentive to get around to being able to vote and get them out of power. Ironically, that's ideally what we want as a society: people feeling invested enough in their new homeland to want to participate in politics and naturalize.

So, are the Democrats pushing for LEGAL immigrants to LEGALLY register to naturalize? Yup. Could have been the Republican vote, but they blew it. Are their efforts being successful because LEGAL Hispanic immigrants are feeling threatened by Republican legislation? Yup. Did the massive fee increase provide a further incentive to naturalize now? Yup. Is any of this an argument for USCIS to drag its feet past the 2008 election? Hardly.

The point that is being conveniently omitted is that a huge chunk of your so called "legal immigrants" are former amnestied "illegal aliens" or the relatives of illegal aliens that got lucky (undeservedly) in the 7 illegal alien amnesties doled out in the last 21 years. These people have come to believe that they (and their amigos) are entitled to be rewarded for IEW and overstay and that the southern US border is an open door just for them. If you can believe the statistics quoted in the Houston Chronicle, the vast majority (more than half) of Hispanics in Iowa are illegal aliens. I think you can extrapolate that to the rest of the USA too. Probably around half of the Hispanics in the USA are illegal aliens. Roughly 80+% of the illegal aliens in the USA are Hispanic.

I find it extremely disturbing and disgusting that any political party that claims to represent the American people would vie for and pander to this lowest common denominator in order to garner votes (whether present or future). The left wing of the Democratic party has taken this low road. None of the Democratic candidates have come out against illegal immigration. In fact, they make a point that they are all for mass blanket amnesty for almost all illegal aliens.

Importing votes? It's pretty obvious to me. Not that I'm a big fan of GWB and some of the other sleazeballs in the Republican party, but I call 'em like I see 'em.

As I said...any political party or candidate that is in favor of "importing votes" or pandering to illegal aliens and their cheerleading squad by promising mass illegal alien amnesty can "go to hell'. It will destroy this country.

So, peejay...do you recommend that we assume that each Hispanic we see is illegal here, based on your extrapolations, and treat them as such?

You sound very threatened by these Spanish-speakers!

approximately 44.5 million hispanics.....from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States

peejays's statement of 80%: 80% of 12-20 million illegals (depending on news source) = 9.6 - 16 million.

44.5 / 9.6 or 16 = 4.6 - 2.75 ratio of illegal hispanic to legal hispanic (assuming that wikipedia lists legal hispanics).

so while his math may not be as precise as you'd like, it's still rather startling to see the figures above eh?

Read what I stated. I stated that it is probable that 50% or more of Hispanics in America are likely illegal aliens. So there is a greater chance that a Hispanic is illegal than not. As I have stated many times in this forum, there are ways of dealing with this situation without violating the rights of people that are entitled to be in America legally. Some of the basic remedies include mandatory verification of documents we already must present to employers to legally work in the USA, no driver's licenses for illegal aliens, verifying status of prisoners in jails, no social services without eligibility of status, cut off sanctuary cities that cater to illegal aliens, etc., etc...the list is long. There is a whole laundry list of remedies to illegal immigration that target everyone without singling out Hispanics or any other "group".

What the lunatic fringe conveniently wants people that are ignorant of the facts and the scope of the problem is...that most of the illegal aliens in the USA are Hispanics. No sh*t...80+% of illegal aliens are Hispanic. All the whining about racism and fear of the Brown people fails to address the fact that countries all over the world have the sovereign right to regulate who, why, when, how, and if anyone is allowed to enter their sovereign nation. Period!

Your amigos don't have any special right or entitlement to break the laws of the USA just because they are Brown people. A sovereign nation is not required to adhere to some affirmative action plan because you think there are too many people of one race or another. That is a totally lame excuse for the illegal alien cheerleading squad to justify mass illegal immigration primarily originating from Mexico and the rest of Latin America.

Try that logic with most any other country in the world and see how far you get. Go tell the Chinese to let more Latinos in because there aren't enough in China. ;)

Peejay, where do you get your statistics?

They have been gleened from various sources. The "80+% of illegals being Hispanic" are from an article I read in USA today a while back. The "50+% of Hispanics are illegals" is extrapolated from the link in this thread from the Houston Chronicle. It states that 48% to 74% of the Hispanics in Iowa are illegal aliens. If Iowa is similare to Houston I would say that is a good ballpark figure. The Houston Chronicle has stated in the past that roughly 25% of the city's population is foreign born and roughly 12% is illegal. So roughly 1/2 of the immigrants in Houston are illegal aliens if you believe their sources. I live in Houston and it appears that way to me. Spend a month or 2 in Houston and see for yourself. I don't doubt it.

The real truth...who f*cking knows? The US goverment doesn't even know how many illegal aliens are in the USA. I've seen estimates of 12 to 20 to 30 million published. One million is a national disgrace, much less 30 million.

If you have better data...feel free to post it. I prefer the truth to bullshit and distortions any day. If my statements are untrue I would be the first person that would want to know. I don't bookmark every article I read nor do I believe everything I read either. I tend to believe unbiased sources (if there is such a thing).
