interview translator

Hi all,

My wife had her interview scheduled for 10/20/2007 and we were very surprised when the interviewer requested a translator. I went to the interview thinking I would be able to serve as her translator. To my surprise I was told I could not. It does not state so anywhere in the paperwork. Anyway to make a long story short. The interview will be rescheduked so that we may bring a translator. All I was told is that it could not be a family member. Is anyone aware of any other restrictions for the translator ie, age or certification.

I know nothing about this, but it seems kinda likely. I guess a cynical person would assume you could doctor her answers to match yours!

A cynical person? I would say it is more a conflict of interest if the petitioner translates for the beneficiary.

I can't remember where, probably here on VJ, but I remember reading somewhere that I, as the spouse, could not translate during my husband's AOS interview. We brought a translator friend, but the Consular Officer said it was not necessary, I could translate and he didn't have to even come into the interview! After I said I thought I could not translate, the CO said yes I could, but he let the translator come in anyway. I guess some COs don't enforce the rules!

I'm not aware of any certification requirements, but I brought with me a statement signed by our translator, saying he was proficient in the language etc.

All embassies have different rules. In the Philippines the embassy provides you with one if needed.

BEST if the beneficiary doesn't need one tho as second hand info can be misleading.

You can't translate as it's a conflict of interest. I guess some IOs may not enforce it, but I've never heard of them really allowing it at the AOS stage.

It just needs to be someone who isn't a family member who speaks the language.

Consulates do provide any translation needed for interviews, but this question has nothing to do with any Embassy or Consulate. AOS interviews are at local USCIS offices in the US. I've been considering what to do in our case too. My wife's friend was allowed to let her teenage daughter translate for her but I think unless I can verify in advance with the service center, we'll bring a translator.

So, this mean that I will need to find someone that speak english and my language there for this AOS interview?

My US citizen fiance don´t know nobody that speak portuguese in his country.

Then he needs to find someone. There are plenty of Brazilians in the US.

If you do not know English fluently, yes, you will need a translator for your AOS interview. Keep in mind that many applications are approved without an interview, so you may not need a translator at all!

When my husband came to USA, within a few months he had met people from his own country and we brought one of those friends to translate. If you still don't have anyone by the time of your AOS interview, you could always use an online Search Engine. Just type in "Portuguese translator" and put the name of the city and state. There are usually a number of translators available.

We're going to have to do this too. Although my husband has learned a lot of English since he came (knowing NOTHING) he will not be able to be interviewed in English - so we'll have to find someone.

Where we live there are TONS of Brazilians, so I guess we'll start looking around and then ask someone we feel comfortable with.

It says on the interview letter that if you are not fluent in English than you have to bring a translator.
