Hi All

Last Thursday my wife and I went in for an interview and I received my Green Card. They said that it cannot be given to me right there and then, because of a mix up they made, and that it will be mailed to me this coming week. My wife (American) and I have been married for almost 3 years now, and I came to the US in the beginning of the year on a K3 Non Immigrant Visa. So at last Thursdays interview, I asked a few questions to the interviewer, but did not get the answers I would have liked too. So maybe you guys can give me some more helpful information on the following:

1. SSN

I was not aware that I could file forms to get this. I though this is automatically given only when you become a US Citizen. So basically I have worked with my Temporary Work Permit, and now will be using my Green Card. Does the green card have a employment tax number on it ? Or should I still need to get a SSN ?

2. How do green card holders file taxes ? What number do you use for your Tax ID ?

3. I also just read that I can apply for the 3 year conditions to be lifted. What does that mean. Can you become a citizen quicker, or do people usually just lift those conditions for travel purposes ?

4. What happens now. Is the filing of forms almost done ? Are we, now that I have my green card, over the biggest mountain ?

I appreciate all you guys, and this amazing forum who has given so much info to us in the past !!

Have a great thanksgiving - it will be my first in the US !!

Thanks

If the interview you had was for AOS and you have been married for more than 2 years then you will get a 10 year greencard not a conditional 2 year greencard.... so you will not have to file to lift the conditions in 2 years time...

As for a SSN you need to go to the SSA office and apply for a SSN you should have this to be able to work.... Taxes are filed before April 15 th each year and you and your wife will file together using both your SSN's...

The Greencard and your foreign passport are all you need for travel outside the US...

Because you are married to a USC you can will be eligible to apply for Citizenship 3 years after the date you were approved for your Greencard.... the earliest you can apply is 90 days before the 3rd anniversary of your AOS approval as long as you meet all the other conditions...

Other than Citizenship there is nothing else you need to apply for so yes you are over the biggest mountain....
